my guess is its when people quote poeple who have already quoted other people...hence their post becomes thi long and sometimes hard to follow mess of text :)

Its when people keep hitting quote to reply and after a few times it starts to look like a pyramid. This apparently does bad things to the forums so it can get you banned.

There's two buttons.
One called Quote
and one called Report
Quote can get you banned now. Go figure. Fix the user, not the button, very CCP.
Report doesn't seem to work. Though having only tried it on people in popular alliances, it's hard to tell.

Now for another stupid question.
If CCP doesn't want "pyramid quoting" then why the fukken hill is that the default when you use their quotey link? Who's the gundam genious that came up with the beauty? What's next, is it going to be a reportable offense if you undock without renaming your ship from the default "ris dnalor's iteron Mark V"? it makes about the same sense to me.
Christ, if you don't want us to quote, then remove the quote button, if you don't want us to "pyramid quote" then stop making it be the default when you click the freakin clicky!

So you're not allowed to use quote now? What the hell's it still there for then? They keep changing things; like last year when there were probably more forum mods than regular forum users. Now there's hardly any (which is nicer). Sometimes it's hard keeping up with all the changes to these forums and it's ever-fluctuating rules.
EDIT: Just seen the sticky on it. Quoting is allowed. Spam quoting isn't, like my fellow Goon above me did; who will likely get banned. I laugh at his misfortune! Mwa ha ha ha!

You are still allowed to use quoting, you're just not allowed to over-do it so much that you screw up the forums. (ie: if you're quoting a post that already has lots of quotes in it, delete the older quotes to prevent the issue)

Come on, that's long been an established part of accepted etiquette on the web - you don't quote more than you type in response. Nothing to do with CCP and all to do with us sometimes taking a joke too far. Banning people for it seems a little over the top, to be sure, but if someone's only using the forums to quote long chunks of text without contributing anything then it's reasonable to tell them to stop it and wise up I think.

What a heap of rubbish
CCP can make a game like Eve yet can't make their forums only copy the new text posted by the last person rather than the whole lot when you hit quote?
That is a crock, there are forums out there that do this already. I do not believe CCP devs are that incapable.

Quoting as it works now is a useful thing. Like so many useful things it can be abused and sometimes people think it should be crippled rather than just used responsibly.
You will note I drag-selected the previous quote and then pressed the delete key. That's how simple it is to choose not to quote too many levels. Or you can just prevent anyone from ever quoting multiple levels because a few people like to abuse it.

Please note that you have the option to simply quote a post or part of a post by using the Originally by: *Player Name*
option.

Quoting giant blocks of posts is considered spamming and is not something the majority of forum users enjoy seeing or reading through.

They could make it so pressing quote only initiates a quoting of the quotee minus previous quotes.
But that would be too easy, wouldn't it?

For such and advanced MMO the forums that back it up have always been a bit behind. Some five years in I think it is still the same stuff they started with. There is more refined forum software out there for free not to mention what you could probably buy.
One would think by now CCP would have hired a webmaster who would rebuild the forums from the ground up using current technology and some savvy programming. Amazes me they have not done this.
Nonetheless pyramid quoting has always been bad netiquette regardless of how slick the software is to try and prevent it. Getting a warning for being obnoxious about it seems appropriate.

That would be more than a pain than occasionally deleting a few unwanted quotes. You often want to quote back two or three levels, it's quoting back twenty that is being complained about.
