Best Sniper? The Assembly Line Geddon:
7x Tachyon Beam Laser I, Large Remote Repair I 1x SB I, 1x TC I, 1x 100mn AB I 3x HS I, 2x RCU I, 1x PDU I, 2x TE I
5x Ogre I or Heavy Tracking Disruptor Drones
190 dps with Radio, 110km range, no cap problems, because of low life expectancy.
Tactics: Warp in and power towards the enemy fleet, trying to get into drone range. Get popped, get insurance cash, warp back to pos, board next Geddon.

Rokh for absolute range. Tempest for Alpha Megathron for DPS
Sums it up nicely really
Except the Abaddon out Alphas the Tempest by a long shot. . .
Except but then you'd have to fly amarr!

While we are talking about sniping battleships, which amarr battleship would be considered 'best'?
While abaddon sure can be impressive ( dps, alpha, ok range, good hp buffer - no complaints there) it also has a lot of drawbacks - namely it cant reasonably fit mwd, needs a lot of cap and fitting mods and even then it cant keep firing for any meaningfull ammount of time.
Geddon would be good, if it wasnt for the low grid - you need several t2 rcu's to use tachyons, cap mods, and then you have little space for tracking/survivability mods.
Apoc is somewhat easier to fit and use, but it's dps is mediocre compared to abaddon ..
So, for a purely amarr character, which of the three outweights it's drawbacks ? |

You can't pick a teir 3 bs over a Teir 2 BS this is not fair!!
Snipping is not how many hit points you have but how much DPS you can do before the targets gets away. In this case the Tempest/Megathron/Geddon win.
Yes, In a 1v1 a Rokh with its 44k hitpoints + bonus to res. will kill a mega
Math:
Snipping Mega with T2 guns and T2 ammo = 365 DPS (no rigs but can fit 2 DPS rigs no problem 373 DPS) Snipping Rokh with T2 guns and T2 ammo = 315 DPS (no rigs can't fit any hybird rigs)
Takes a normal BS about 20 sec to warp away from a gate. Mega hitpoints (33,237) Range = 220 Rokh hitpoints (44,479) Range = Max Temp hitpoints (32,186) Range = 201
Mega =(365 DPS) x (20 SEC) x (10 BS) = 73,000 DPS (tracking is better .003) Rokh =(315 DPS) X (20 SEC) x (10 BS) = 63,000 DPS (Tracking = .005) Temp =(371 DPS) X (20 SEC) x (10 BS) = 74,200 DPS (Tracking = .005)
Now lets even the odds by using the Gal/Min Teir 3 BS
Hyperion = (416 DPS) x (20 sec) x (10 BS) = 83,200 DPS with 40k hitpoints, Range = 220, tracking = .004 Malel = (395 DPS) X (20 SEC) x (10 BS) = 79,000 DPS with 36kk hittpoints range = 210
Now pick your ship?
The Rokh gets pwd by real turret boats in DPS. I'll suck up the 20-30km ranges the Rokh has for 20k more DPS in 20 sec.
I have 2 characters with Maxed out skillz in Gal/Min. i used my Gallante one in the Rokh since the skillz are the same besides the BS skill. Sorry I could not toss in Amarr since I know they can also get into the high numbers.

The must fun I had snipping was about 2 years ago when I could volley BC's. I could get wrecking hits in the 2400 range with 1 gun.
I use to sit about 40km off the gate with EMP loaded in my Tempest. I could volley Cruises before they warped and sometimes I could volley BC before they warped. People use to try and 1v1 me but they would run fast when they saw their shields go from 100%-0% with 90% armor left in 1 volley. What most people didn't realize was it took me about another 15 sec before I could do that again. (Good old days)
Now a BS can't even lock a cruiser before it warps.

havent seen the sentry domi mentioned...at 150k with t2 sentries you can beat the dps of many of the setups ive seen in this thread...also, 2 or 3 425mm II's on top of that.

Originally by: Laboratus Why is it a terrible sniper? It's got alphastrinke, dps, good lock times, 8 low slots etc
You need a mwd and 2 SBs, now you can fire for maybe 2 minutes before capping out due to the lack of a cap injector. Even the abaddon can fire for 5 minutes because it has a heavy injector.
If you dont fit a mwd...then you die horribly when you get bubbled.
Amarr snipers need 4 mids to be an effective fleet sniper, the exception is the apoc because it doesnt need a cap booster once you fit 3 ccc rigs.

workable (if somewhat bootleg) geddon:
6x tachyon II
MWD sensor booster II medium cap booster II
2x heat sink II signal amplifier II tracking enhancer II 2x EANM II damage control II RCU II
of course probably by the time you have the skills to fit that you can afford to lose an abaddon. it does operate at 150km and is cap stable while the booster lasts. cheap for what it does even if what it does isn't very impressive.

This seems incorrect. Within 20 seconds Mega and Rokh shoot 3 times, Tempest only 2. So we have 2100*3*10=62000 for Mega, 1800*3*20=54000 for Rokh and 3400*2*10=68000 for Tempest. If we count lock time, lets say 6 sec, then Megathron and Rokh will shoot twice, Tempest only once. So only 42000, 36000 and 34000 dmg. PS: maybe its worthwile to send couple of tacklers on that gate ? )) And yes, tempest is the best sniper

A domi would make a better sniper than that fit, and a domi is about as useful as a raven in fleet.

Edited by: Pan Zhu''Liang on 19/01/2008 00:37:45 just because a domi can field the same number of guns doesn't mean it deals the same damage. what exactly does it do better? other than potentially longer range i don't see what would make up for the significantly reduced damage.
edit: and on second thought my ghetto geddon would be better with a third heat sink rather than the second EANM.

150km lock range=fail sauce. Domi with 6 rails can actually lock and hit at sniper ranges. You need to be able to lock and hit to at least 180km to be considered a true sniper.

well, you can push the geddon to 170 without issue. 180 requires dropping the damage control. i'm not sure those last 10 kilometers really make or break it, but being inexperienced i'll take your word for it. the point is that it's a cheap alternative, not a top of the line fleet ship.

on gates ive had reasonable expirences with the tempest at around 140+ opt
and for those that are wondering alpha beats all in sniping ships cause you'll only get one shot in per ship
and lets not forget 2 cruise missles into people calcs on the tempest, along with 3 sentries if your not incl any close range defense, tho some people incl 2 nuets and med/lights to fend off nanos, i beleive thats why you brought smaller support instead of not fitting total sniper
For All that has been said and done, you will suffer... |

Geee, if only there was some gain from that range bonus like, I don't know, NOT needing to fit an ass-load of tracking mods to get up to sniper ranges, or maybe NOT demanding awesome gunnery skills out of a caldari pilot.
Tempest gets my vote as fleet sniper as it can use all its cap for remote reps and the like.

Originally by: Nomakai Delateriel Personally I'd have to say that the best sniper is the Megathron.
1. Fairly easy to fit, even when using the heaviest caliber rails (425s). 2. 7 bonused high slots with excellent optimal deliver a lot of damage. 3. Enough mids to fit a sufficient amount of Tracking computers/Sensor boosters. 4. Enough lows to be able to fit 3 damage mods and still fit a semi-decent tank. 5. It has a built in tracking bonus, which means that as targets get closer, faster and more agile the Megathron has an advantage against all other arty/rail snipers. Laser snipers have pretty good tracking too, but ships like the Geddon and Abaddon have difficulties matching the Megathron in terms of range, tank and cap stability.
In conclusion: Powerful, Versatile, Durable. While other snipers may excel over the megathron in a particular niche the Megathron is always "close enough" in terms of damage/tracking/tank/staying power to any niche sniper, while surpassing it in all other categories. That's why the Mega is the best sniper in the game (IMHO).
This man speaks truth. Versatility is key.

Armageddon.
1) Its the cheapest, tier 1 BS, that snipes DAMN WELL and uses no ammo. 2) 8 lows = lots of dps fittings. 3) When you fire your guns in a laggy battle, they don't stop firing until your target is dead. Other BS eventually have to reload. 4) Nice pos shotter, the right damage type, infinite ammo.
