warning forever. - boss fight after boss fight. very cool.
DEATHWORM!!! - in your face DiLaurentis. THIS is how it should be.
dicewars - like risk, only different.
onslaught - lemmings meets command and conquer with a dash of pipemania? no? suit yourself. good game mind.
gridwars 2 you need a joypad for this. if you don't have one, get one - they're only a tenner from GAME.
Star Control 2!!! sheer genius.
ground control - if you can find it. same goes for beneath a steel sky + b17 flying fortress.

Not strictly freeware, but bump worth is the Full MAME torrent. thousands of arcade games, falling into every conceivabe category. Hilights include some of the best 2d fighting games ever created and a selection of amazing shmups. (afaik the full torrent is about 15gb these days)
use MAME32 to run them unless you're a masochist.

warning forever. - top-down shooter boss fight after boss fight. adapts to your play-style allegedly. very cool.
QFT. Totally addictive, especially when you really start to get the hang of the aiming. Try it with no time limit and one extra life per level, should give you some pretty solid bosses in the end. And they do adapt, sort of. Each boss improves whatever system you hit the hardest on the previous ones, the most obvious example being if you only shoot at the bottom half before popping the core then the bottom half will grow but the top half will stay exactly as in stage 1.
Oh and the first Ground Control is OZOM too, way better than the sequel imnsho. As I recall it was fairly groundbreaking when it was new and although it's fairly dated by now (has it been 8 years already?! ) it's still a very cool game.

i always prefered zangband but i'm not hardcore enough to play without one of the snazzy graphical tilesets.
although sans-graphics, it has the added advantage of looking like a hex editor for those of use ninja-gaming on our employer's time.

Freespace 2 has got to be the top of my tree. Proprietary-developed open source game with so may mods, campaigns and total conversions that you could be playing it non-stop for a month and still have stuff left to do. ------

abandonware is dodgy ground though - its commercial software that, for whatever reason, nobody bothers enforcing copyright on anymore.
technically its still piracy, but nobody cares enough to prosecute. Like stealing towels in a hotel or something.

(Play freespace 1 first though if you haven't just yet: you can download freespace 1 campaign as a mod for freespace 2) Youtube vid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=35Agz8NGVak
thanks for those links, haven't played freespace in ages, and with all the extra mods this is just brilliant.

It's been a couple years since I played this game, I liked it quite much even though the battles (hyper melee was what they were called, wasn't it?) never really worked out in my favor... At times I had to resort to asking a friend to take control. Seemed so easy when he did it, meh. I liked the humor... "Are you sentient?" "@#$@%%$#$%@$#&Ç#"

Different ships are more adept at killing various opponents. Although once you have enough choices you find yourself sticking to one mostly that tends to kill all. It can be hard at the beginning though till you get those choices and your main ship is buffed up.
