I'm still flying in a Frigate (Tristan). I usually work with the corporation I am in when they go hunting for pirates.
My question is this... I've been seeing on these forums and just in my own experience that combat does not last very long. Usually it is a joust of keeping your opponent at your optimal range and pounding them with weapons and electronics warfare while keeping your shields and armor at optimum levels.
Do battleship vs. battleship encounters last longer? How long does the normal encounter last? What about several battleships all at once?
My hope is that it is a very long and drawn out process where tactics, special maneuvers and sometimes, sheer luck come into play. But I fear I may be wrong.
Anywya, can someone answer me? If time is different between hunting NPC's and players, I would like to know how it is different.
Thanks!

In equal battles, it isn't quick--it usually lasts a while if the sides are evenly matched.

I fly the krestel/malediction because I've heard that ATUK ganked 40 industrials with them. Now, so far, no industrials. Just cruisers.
Keep on flaming, lamers.

Well, to actually answer the post:
Battles are EXTREMELY fast, and I hate it. I would also like to see battles lasting 30+ minutes, but they don't. You can lose everything you've spend weeks getting in 30 seconds. 1on1 in battleships last perhaps a couple of minutes, and a really big fleet battle will last 5-10 minutes (would be faster if there was no lag). The lag makes it take time to lock targets, warp out etc. It works as a pretty effective warp scrambler actually, but it also makes the battle slow, and you actually get time to think about what to do - which is bad. I'd like to see things in battles happen fast and smoothly so you might make mistakes because of the speed, but still battles that would last more than a few minutes. This would only happen if damage of all weapons was decreased or shield/armor/structure was increased.
Tactics and coordination will be needed in fleet battle, but it's not like little SWAT men who are very mobile etc. Once you're in the battle, it's mostly about shooting and using EW. It's not as simple as this though.

Edited by: Shaelin Corpius on 22/03/2004 23:59:00 They should increase the hitpoint values of ships by %300 and keep the same damage rating for weapons.
Youd get 3x the blasting fun.
And most battles are lopsided, so usually 1-2 ships don't last long when pounded by 10-20 others.
and if the NPC's hp are tripled, triple/quadruple the bounty prize. That would make hunting npcs with friends actually a little worthwhile. Instead of earning 10k for each cruiser killed.
