So I have a AMD 64 bit processor, a ATI 9550, 1GB ram, and Ubuntu, and for some reason its not working.
Ive been told that Eve doesn't support or allow you to use ATI cards with Ubuntu.
I was wondering if there was any truth to this and if not is there a known work around?

the wrapper the client is using to convert dx to ogl does not support ati very well at all. i would recomend getting a nvida card if you want to play on linux.

The official linux client can run on ATI cards, CCP just doesn't support it. I have an ATI X1600 on Ubuntu 7.10 and it works for me. Sadly I barely have the time to test it extensively (read: actually play) but I do know that I can login, spin my ship around and set long skills :)
I get some strange lighting artefacts though... I'm hoping that will be solved soon. Are you using fglrx?

After much fussing about on the Ubuntu forums I have figured out that I am using fglrx. Or I'm pretty sure I am.
When I use the config tool I fail the 2 graphics test on the top and the audio test on the bottom. Ill try and copy n past my system specs from the config tool when I get home tonight. The config tool doesn't show my ATI card, which is a bit disturbing to me.
But I have the game installed and when I click on it nothing happens.......
Good thing I installed a drive just for Ubuntu so I can duel boot and still train skills.

Im running the wine version under kubunty 7.04 with an ATI x700 card on my laptop. Without any problems.
One way of testing the graphocs card is to run the command fgl_glxgears. It is giving me a frame rate around 880 fps and my client is givin me around 15 fps in game - not great but fully playable.

Calderio@BOBubuntu:~$ fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":1.0". Error: couldn't get fbconfig
I also ran glxinfo shortly after and got: Calderiok@BOBubuntu:~$ glxinfo name of display: :1.0 Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":1.0". display: :1 screen: 0 direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
So it does look like Direct Rendering is turned off. Any ideas on how to turn it on?

above is my xorg.conf file.
I might have done something to my system, I know this by the tell tale signs of programs opening slowly and seeing lines on my screen when I scroll threw large text documents. Right now I do now even see the blinky curser on the screen as i am typing this.
