I've just recieved an e-mail from "[email protected]" using almost my correct chracter name telling me I can re-actvate that Character for 9.95
This character is paid for up until 21/05/2008 and I would have thought a mailshot like this would have been better targeted, if it were legit.
Now having investigated further while typing this is see the reactivation link in the e-mail takes me to "https://secure.eve-online.com/login.aspx?username=Malikanth" Note the username is wrong.
Bad targeting, good spoof or wrong owner of a Toon with a similar name?

Fake, fake, fake. If I recall, CCP never sends subscription notifications. And I would love to be paying 9.95 a month instead of 14.95. ;) --- lol.. I messed up.

However strangely enough the offer is real. People who reactivate their inactive account this month pay $9.95 for the first month "although it goes back to the normal price afterwards". I reopened an account with this offer. The link seems strangely correct, but if I did take up the offer I'd go to www.eve-online.com & renew rather then trusting the email-link just in case. ___________

If it actually takes you to https://secure.eve-online.com then it is legit. Or atleast the link is legit, if not the contents of the email.
Just be sure that it actually takes you to the right site. Sometime they will have the text of the link say one thing, while the html of the link will send you somewhere else. There are even some tricks they can use to hide the link from showing up correctly in the status bar when mousing over it.
However if you paste that URL that you provided strait into your browser it will take you to CCP's official website.

As noted in another thread, legit Eve emails won't ask you to click anything. You should always go directly to the Eve site and renew from there.

I took advantage of that offer. I can't remember if I clicked the link in the mail or did it the old fashioned way but it worked and my account was renewed. Hmmm. Now I am paranoid.

I suspect every CCP offer. True or not. ;)

Edited by: Blu Root on 16/01/2008 21:53:07 I could tell it was fake before you even finished your first sentence, i doubt CCP would send spam mail via subscribermail.com and i'm positive they'de spell your character name right lmao
EDIT: heh turns out they do use that service, never noticed

This is actually a legitimate offer.
"The first month of EVE Online will cost only 9.95 with this special reactivation offer. Following the first month, your account will automatically be billed as a recurring subscription for 14.95 a month."
This offer is only good for another four days.

The offer is legit but is the e-mail? Did CCP actually send mail from [email protected]?

Edited by: Alowishus on 16/01/2008 22:07:24 From what I can tell, CCP used a third party marketing company to promote this offer. Is that correct?

As the OP I can categorically state I've also never ever fallen for any type of internet fraud. I've also refrained from using words blocked by CCP's naughty word scanner thingy, unlike you, my foul mouthed friend.
If you actually read the OP it was a query on poor spelling for a real account name (and no I don't have another similarly named character), why a real offer would be sent to an ineligible account, was it just poor targeting, or indeed a very cleaver spoof?
It's turns out it's real and poorly targeted from what I can tell. End of story. /me removes tin foil hat.
