Edited by: Boneyard on 23/03/2004 04:07:56 Edited by: Boneyard on 23/03/2004 04:07:41 New to Eve and have spent my time thus far in mining. I have the itch tho to get into some combat and to learn the ins and outs so to speak. I would like to know if there is a place where I can find some easy NPC pirates to cut my teeth on? Thx in advance.

I know some 2k rats spawn in the .7 space asteroid belts. You could cruise those and start popping them there. When I started playing I was hunting in .5 space with a Condor so you could probably go to .5 and hunt in the belts there. You want a better frigate than the starting frigate though. You just cant kill effectivly in the starting ship.
However, most level 1 frigates can be found on the market for like 20k or so depending on where you look. Even level 2s can go for pretty cheap and you can get one in your first few days of playing.
Also remember that you want to keep your distance from NPCs at start and stay as far away from them as you can the small frigates can't take direct fire well, even from the starter NPCs. You will want to train your navigation skils so you can use afterburners. Speed is life.
You can make like 30-50k an hour in the belts in empire space, sometimes more if you get alot of spawns and dispatch them quickly.
Hope that helps.

OK thanks...just want some exposure...learn how the system works in EVE. I have what I think is a good setup for a frigate.

That'll certainly be enough for most low level spawns. I'd consider trying to get a shield booster on there, even the civilian shield booster is better than a kick in the nuts. Saves messing around waiting for your shield to recharge and can save your backside.

You might also want to look for a froigate that doesnt use missiles. Missiles are ok for damage, but cost more then other weapons type in ammo. A lot more..

Definitely.
Missiles are poor weapons to use against NPCs. They kill them just fine but as mentioned they are very expensive when compared to turret ammo. You will seriously eat into your profits using missiles NPC hunting. Depending what missiles you use it is conceivable to evne lose money in the deal.
I keep missiles as my 'backup' weapon when hunting NPCs. If a few too many ships get a little too frisky I unload the missiles to ease the pressure. Otherwise I depend on my guns to do 90% of the killing.
Be careful your first few times out. Start in a 0.8 system or maybe 0.7 and get a feel for the NPCs, what types of ships they are, what they are shooting, their ranges and so on. Run away if things even start to look a little bad for you. After a bit you will get the hang of them and refine your setup to best deal with them. After that go down another sec level and see what is on offer. Once again being careful if you run into more powerful NPCs till you get their rhythm. And so on...a few hours is all you'll need to get yoru stride as long as you are careful to not overreach too far too soon.

Thanks for the replies. Last night I covered a friend of mine while he mined in a .7 system. All in all about 12 pirates fell to my missles and combat drone sidekick. It was a good learning experience. I also learned the asteroids cant be killed, lol. Had a little targeting mixup. The missles were VERY fun to use but I see what you are saying about the cost. Could have made way more money mining. I looted a few things but dont really know what to do with them so I put them on the market after researching their value a bit. It was nothing I could use as of yet and while someone suggested I reprocess them I couldnt figure out what that was. The only trouble I had was when my head got a little big and I took on 3 at once at close range and lost 20% of my hull.
If anyone can explaint the reproccessing thing Id appreciate it.
Thx again.

Boneyard, SFHI has a set up and running school for teaching new players the ropes of the game, We have 2 groups of graduates already, and we're always happy to take new players.
As for reprocessing, it's a station service (like fitting and market) that allows you to recycle modules and ore into raw minerals. If you've been mining without reprocessing the ore into minerals youre in bad shape, because you can usually make abotu twice as much selling the minerals, as you can selling the ore that you would refine to get them.
Hopefully I'll hear from you ingame.
