In case anyone hasn't noticed yet, the world of EVE revolves around trade. If someone does not think so, I _strongly_ suggest they peruse some of the fine stories and POTYs listed on that little bar to the left.
If a pirate group (m00) blockades all trade in an area and the locals (other PCs) can't deal with the problem, the imperial goverment (developers and event authors) are eventually going to get involved. That's what government is for.
Keep in mind, these governments are going to be the groups who build things like stargates and spacestations, who built the society we are populating. So when they decide to take action, it comes down like the hammer of God. Even a group of powergamers isn't going to have that kind of funding and support in-game.
And that should never have happened. EVE is not about standing up to governments. Its about establishing fame and fortune as social elements like corporations.
m00 didn't understand anything beyond basic ship-to-ship and metagame combat tactics. (Although, to give them credit, they certainly understood them well.) Rather then establishing a good strategy, they chose an us-vs-the-world idea of blockading a system against travel and trade, the very thing that the governments of EVE allow space captains to operate for. That strategy is against the core idea of the game.
Its only natural that they would decry the situation as unfair. And it is unfair. But the situation wasn't fair to m00's victims either, and so any argument they can make about rights and fairness is fundamentally flawed. And even if the fairness argument wasn't flawed, it's foolhardy to think that there isn't someone out there who will eventually do exactly what The Four did.
So, what lessons can m00 and other players learn from this?
1: Practice the Doctrine of Mobility.
m00's loss was guaranteed in a standup fight against DED. They should have moved their operations the second DED got involved. Piracy itself implies mobility.
2: Promote Trade.
If m00 wanted the system or the region, they should have asked anyone travelling to the system to follow certain rules while in it. They might declare a certain system's asteroid fields off-limits. Or they might exact a toll for safe pirate-free passage.
3: Use NPC Pirates as a Model for Behavior.
m00's conduct towards piracy was described as 'questionable' in other threads. If they mimic the tactics of NPCs for their piracy, their conduct becomes impeccable. m00 would be duplicating the behavior of NPC pirate groups. It could then be argued that, since DED does not directly eliminate Serpentis, there would be no reason for DED to directly eliminate m00.

Having been browsing the forums at the time (ie last night), it does seem this was one of a number of threads bumped by someone who then removed their posts.
For example, the Red Corsair recruitment thread first had a reply that talked about how they had been seen recently in Yulai - yet that post has been deleted by the author that bumped the thread by the time I checked it again this morning.
(And no, it wasn't me. )

Edited by: Inanna Sumer on 10/08/2004 09:43:59 Edited by: Inanna Sumer on 10/08/2004 09:43:31 since some mod will probably check this thread and lock it (IBTL ), you may want to look into implementing some kind of warning before replying to a thread that's older than a certain time (eg 3 months), even if the post deleting bumper ignores it, the innocent victims of their bumping will be aware they're replying to such an old thread and maybe refrain from bumping it again.
