I'm a very new player, and had recently managed to save up for an industrial ship after a few days playing.
As I plan on being a trader and miner, I wanted to go and mine an asteroid and start myself on my way so fitted my indy with a mining laser, found a scordite rock and started mining. After about 30 minutes of doing this my phone goes and I go to answer it. Coming back a while later - expecting myself to still be mining away - I find my ship surrounded by Concord being told that another player has killed me - (presumably comitting suicide by doing so.) As I could not afford insurance I was back to square one pretty much.
Why did someone want to kill me? Was I doing something wrong? If so what, as I will need to mine in safe space for a while until I can progress on and don't fancy being blown away every hour or so. ------------------------------

Did you get an EVE-mail from Concord telling you who did it? ---------------------------------------------

Bad luck m8, looks like someone tried to loot you, prolly a n00b who did not know that concord would wipe them out.
At least you learnt never to leave your ship in open space :)

Yes I got a mail, and it was someone who had been playing for nearly six months.
As long as this is not par for the course I will give it another go, but it had me pretty much about to unsubscribe. ------------------------------

You did nothing wrong, beside the fact you should "never" fly or mine away from keyboard. They guy who ganked you did it out for fun, maybe he "felt" you were afk and risked losing his ship for the "fun". ____________________________________________________

Most people dispise AFK mining in 1.-.9 space with Indys. If you can afford a Indy you should move out of 1.0 and get into a .6-.8 systems to mine in. Pirates Target AFK miners just because your not present at your key board. Indys are made to haul not mine with.

Edited by: Androsin on 23/03/2004 17:28:13 Ok, if I was doing something against the spirit of the game then I accept that if it is an unwritten rule. I guess I can understand people being annoyed at massive groups coming and mining all the asteroids when they have been long established players and have the ability to mine in more dangerous space - but this was my only ship and I had nothing else to mine with. I tried mining in 0.7 space in an Imicus and didn't last very long...Surely the whole problem could be solved by not allowing mining lasers to be put on Indies?
In any event thanks for the offers of help - I'm back up to an Incursus now from doing agent missions, but am looking for a corp. ------------------------------

Well being new as well, I interpreted the security ratings slightly differently. I understood you can be attacked anywhere, by anyone. Just if it is a high security system there are consequences on the attacker for doing so.
Some good info is in this post
Rules of Engagement - Updated.
That is stickied at top of this forum.
I think you were just unlucky, majority or people will not attack you in 1.0 space out of courtesy (as most people in 1.0 space are new players), don't think there is any settings that prevent attacking anyone in a 1.0 space.

You can be attacked any where. there is no Truely safe space. in 1.-.5 space Concord will destory any ship that attacks you except for NPC Pirates acourse.

Lesson 1: Dont leave home without FULL coverage insurance! Insurance is much cheaper than funding a new ship.

some people take extreme exception to afk miners in high sec space, especially in an indy.

Quote: some people take extreme exception to afk miners in high sec space, especially in an indy.
It is the Battle-Hoovers mining in 1.0 space that generally gets people's panties in a knot.
That said an indy mining in 1.0 space is generally viewed as an AFK miner as otherwise it is just silly. Indies are the flat-out worst miners in the game (except for a Kestrel I suppose ). Their only upside mining is the large cargo so you don't have to unload to a jet can. Given that it is assumed someone using an indy to mine 1.0 space is off watching tv or sleeping or something and earning money essentially doing nothing.
It is lousy to get ganked in 1.0 space and surprising a 6 month old character would risk his frigate (cheap as they are) and sec rating over an indy mining low value ore. Unless he knew you had been there a long time and were loaded with ore and he had a buddy nearby with an indy it is hard to see how he even expects to make much money doing that. Sounds like a griefer plain and simple. Unfortunately they do exist in EVE like any other game.
For future reference:
- Going AFK at anytime while in space is potentially dangerous and generally a Bad Idea.
- Indies make LOUSY miners...just about any other ship is better at it (barring maybe the Kestrel only which cannot mine at all). Use the indy to haul while another ship mines. Use a frig like an Incursus that has 3 mining lasers and get a buddy to haul while you mine and you'll both make more money than if you mined alone in a hauler. Use just about any frig and a friend to haul and split the money 50/50 and you are no worse off doing it alone in a hauler (moneywise).
- Indies pop (die) very very easily. Not a good ship to rest ALL your hopes on. Keep a frig or two handy then get an indy if you like.

You might have been attacked by a pirate, as others have noted above. You might instead have been the victim of a terrorist attack, though. Some Caldari corporations (notably "The Lame Ducks") engage in attacks on Gallente miners in high-security space in an attempt to force the Gallente Federation to return Caldari Prime to the Caldari State.
Defensive tactics against these attacks are similar to those used against pirates in high-security systems. A brief overview is available at the Gallente Union website

You got griefed, plain and simple.
Devs, please look this up and ban the griefers account. Afterall 1.0 is supposed to be safe. Sure the guy who did it was shield tanking Concord with 99 of his best buddies, but griefing is griefing plain and simple, and griefing in 1.0 has already been shown to be against the rules, and bannable.

Edited by: Chepe Nolon on 25/03/2004 12:42:41 I don't know why 1.0 isn't a no pvp-zone period? Offensive modules should be locked down and drones pasified.
This shouldn't be too hard? Even though it would require some alterations to missions and corp wars. Only concord should be allowed to carry live weapons in 1.0.
And imho 1.0 should be newbie systems only. Highwaysystems like Luminaire, yulai etc should be max 0.9.

To add on the top of that even if you Androsin was in front of your PC and not AFK while mining you wouldnt even had a chance to escape anyway as Indys take so long to get WARP kicked in.If that little s**t warped in at 15km from you and locked you traight away..... you dead. --------------------------------------

Simple fact of the matter is that he was afk. No where have i read or been told that its safe to be afk, even in 1.0 . I cant say that I care for the attitude of 'I lost my stuff, im canceling my account' . This is a mmog, its designed to be random and chaotic, just like real life. If you decide to continue playing the game your garaunteed to lose more than an indy. Im niether for or against aggressions in high sec space but I am against paying a monthly fee for a mining simulator.
