Interesting, so were you getting errors or was the program just not running when you found that you were forced to use compatibility mode?

Has the in built firewall been beefed up a bit?

I'm not using a beta version. I am using the latest preview version, RC1 and yes the firewall has been much improved.

Can't really see how this would be a major issue with Eve. We get patches on a regular basis, and slipping in a change covering any necessary differences concerning XPSP2 in due time wouldn't cause anyone any problems (except the devs who have to do the code ), since all players have to install the patch to be able to connect to the game.
I think areas where there can be problems is for applications that are updated in more old fashioned ways, with manually downloaded patches or new versions. There's a chance of developers getting an inflow of support issues from users wondering why their applications suddenly stopped working.

I'm running SP2 RC1 on my machine, and it runs the latest version of EVE fine, I don't have to set any compatibility settings or do anything. I haven't had it crash and I've yet to have any connection problems, or see anything odd. ----- I have taken all knowledge to by my province. - Sir Francis Bacon science & technology news

(this is a cross post from the other XPSP2 thread)
Are you running XP SP2 RC1 (build 2097)?
What video card are you running on? Have you installed directx9? What version drivers are you running?
I just installed build 2097 on my P4, with Radeon 9800 PRO 128 meg and it worked fine off the bat.. That's not detracting from your issues, I just want to understand it so it can be fixed..
Is the screen partly rendering? or completely a black window? If it's completely black, you're probably using an onboard intel video..
Please let me know as I want to make sure it all works correctly for XPSP2
