Hey folks,
I guess the forum moderators might be able to answer this aswell. I was just curious what kind of a database EVE was running on. I seem to remember reading or heading somewhere that it was a DB2 database. But I always get databases from other places confused with the main DB's at work here (which happen to be glorius, monstrous DB2 databases).
Now, if the answer to that is yes, I was wondering what you use to interface with the DB2 databases. Do you just connect to the database from object-oriented classes or something of the sort? Or do you use COBOL, since DB2 is a mainframe DB.
Again, I could be missing something entirely or thinking of a completely different game... but logic would point toward using DB2, since you folks have attained the most monstrous single-server user counts.
Anyways, there's no super-duper important reason for knowing this. It's just to satisfy my own curiosity... well, that, and - provided you guys actually use DB2 (and maybe even a teensy bit of COBOL) - that might give me hope that jobs may eventually come up in that area at CCP and I can start constantly sending CCP my resume and all that other fun stuff. More than anything, though, it's just because I'm very, very curious.
So... all that said, PLEASE respond! I mean... it's practically just a series of yes's and no's.

 Really? Wow... I totally thought you guys would have been using something more heavy-duty.

MS SQL really isn't that bad and it fitted well with their hardware architecture. CCP had problems previously with the db because of IO limitations (resolved with the RAMSAN).

There was some info on the db stats mentioned at Fanfest.
From memory it is something like 8500 transactions per second ... but I could be wrong.
And the DB is not the bottleneck for the system.

We have lots of funny joke about COBOL at work (eg COBOL really stands for: 'Compiles Only By Obscene Luck'  ) but yeah I don't know anyone who would voluntarilly write something in COBOL these days. I believe CCP are using CISC based (x86) servers from IBM rather then IBM's own RISC based (power) servers, or their mainframe (Z-series) We have a few IBM p-series at work, which we use for Computation Fluid dynamics and Finite Element analysis (both very CPU intensive tasks) but for CCP which is more IO based (I think)the extra processing grunt probably does not neccesitate the extra cost.
