Been sitting around downloading a 800mb file so I've been trying to stay off the pc while it does it's thang.
So far I've managed to watch an episode of SG1 and 300. Also fixed my flashlight on my A-5 so I can use the trigger switch again AND I managed to fix a really nice red dot sight that I thought was un-repairable. Now I just gotta figure out how to attach that to the A-5.
It won't fit on top as the hopper gets in the way so I was gonna stick it up by the flashlight on the guard. Only problem is that the rails are too wide for the sights catch. Any ideas anyone?
And it's gotta be strong too so it can endure running, diving, dogpiling, and whatever other brutalities I can bring on the field.

Well I havn't used an A-5 in a long time but don't ricochet do a hopper thats much slimmer than the standard one? also could try sanding or filing down the sides on the dot sight catch...or just do what i do...duct tape it on at an offset angle (means i can use it with a mask on as well as a stock) then zero it
Note: What size rails does the A5 have? I thought it had dovetails on the top (11mm-13mm I think) so that dot sight must have a pretty small fitting, so failing all other options you could always buy a rail changer would put the sight up higher and so may solve the hopper problem. ---

I hear duct tape works pretty good as well.

Those duct tape mods are for pussies. You're not allowed to use guns and flashlights at the same time, and real men don't need to.
Wait, this isn't about Doom3 is it?

Edited by: Micheal Dietrich on 19/01/2008 17:58:35 I would have to say the rails on the A-5 are larger than normal. As seen here the Red dot fits fine on the AK with a standard sight mount.
Close up
But as you can see on the A-5 the sight mount is blocked by the hopper
And the forward rails are still too large even with the red dots grips fully extended.
But I was thinking about putting it on at a angle. Maybe drill some holes into the bottom of the red dots mount and run a couple of bolts through the A-5's guard.
I'm thinking before I start doing any machine work though I may make a little trip down to Cabela's and see if they have any rail adapters that I can use. Although I love duct tape because it works on everything I'm trying to keep a not too redneck profile on my guns.
Again I apologize for crappy photography. I really need to find the powerplug to my camera.
and I'm DL'n at 51.3kb/s for lofty's info. First off remember that I live in the middle of nowhere BUT if you know of any tricks to speed it up I'm willing to try.

Yeah the dot sight is designed for dovetail rails, definitely, but to be honest its not too hard to find weaver-dovetail rail adaptors, and i'm from england so i'm sure you'll have no trouble in the US, problem is they can get fairly pricey for a well made one, still think you should look up the ricochet cyclone hopper, im certain it has a slimmer profile than the standard one, but failing all else you could probably pick up a weaver rail dot site for fairly cheap, I managed to get a brand new tasco 3-9x scope on heightened mounts, for a little over 20 pound (about 40 USD) that fit my MR-1 sniper config perfectly.
Note: Wish I could afford an A-5...paintballing in britain is far too pricey for its own good ---

I'd say "owned" but I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago, fortunately my internet speed seems to be slightly faster than yours ---

Back to the gun. It looks like Cabela's doesn't have what I'm looking for. The guy I talked to though did say I should be able to grind down the current rail to match the red dot and since I'm going to my dad's tomorrow anyways I'll take the guard with me and destroy his grinder. Hopefully it should work.
I'm trying to download DAOC back onto my system and the way they do things is ******** at best. First you need at least the catacombs client. Luckily I found my disc collection of that. Then you need to download the darkness rising expansion which is the 800 mb file I downloaded last night. THEN you need the Labyrinth of the Minatour expansion which luckily was still on my system. Each one puts a shortcut onto desktop.
So I got all that done and clickied the shortcut for another 500 megs of patch work. Got that finished and logged in. Went to make a new character and realized I couldn't find the mino race. OH SNAP, wrong client. So now I'm DL 300 megs for the Labyrinth client as I upgraded darkness rising. It's a pity mythic doesn't know how to make one client like CCP does.
I did this last year on my older pc and seriously it took me like 3 days because I downloaded EVERYTHING.
And I still gotta go and find a decent UI to use too and load up the drivers for my nostromo.

dude why do you want all that crap on your A-5 anyways? makes it heavy and big (more surface area to get shot)
what kind of shroud do you have? the g36 shroud has standard milspec rails (as do most shrouds), or you could go cheap and get the offset hopper for $20.

Firstly those rails on the shroud are standard mil-spec, they are weaver or ris, both fit the same things basically, they have a width of 20mm if I recall, also A-5's have an offset hopper anyway, the cyclone feed relies on it to work.
On the issue of weight if you're doing milsim paintballing you'll often have a remote line or a smaller tank anyway (i've seen ones that just use sparklets instead), and with the size of the hopper anyway I don't think a dot sight would make much difference to the overall profile, and the benefits outweigh the losses anyway...snapshooting is very fun

I'm a woodsballer so we generally don't go by speedball tourny rules unless we do an actual tournament. Our standard rules are no hands, feet, or gun hits. So in our case a larger profile gun is actually a benefit if your walking through the woods with your gun across your chest and somebody pops out and shoots it 3 times. During a tournament your usually playing in the day on a smaller field so all that gear can go.
I've got the flashlight w/trigger button for night games. Flashlights do wonders for blinding opponents. And I cannot tell you how many times I've been shot in the ass by some guy with a red dot from 50 yards away. Some other member of LEP Recon also pack laser sights, scopes, and nightvision.
Aside from that I wear a vest that holds my air and pods which also means I've got a remote so I don't have to worry about can weight on the gun. Although if I don't use the remote I'm more able to switch hands if I'm needed to shoot left handed around a rock or something.
All that aside we also use field radio's with earpieces. This has made my team one of the best in my area but we also gotta take into account that we end up fighting a bunch of rented 98's which on some days it's just plain fun to obliterate the opponent so bad.
Once I finish my A-5 I'm gonna fix my 98 and mod it into a sniper rifle with a big scope on it.
Also my gun is a lightweight compared to my friends. His is designed to look like a SAW and it weighs about 50lbs. It's a monster in a static area though.
