Edited by: ElyseChase on 21/01/2008 06:02:50 I see people with -9.0 and -10.0 security status flying around. I was wondering, isn't that inconvenient when your trying to buy stuff from the market or via contracts? Because you can only access low sec, and most of the time market prices and options aren't very good in low sec. And you have to zig zag along low sec routes just to get anywhere, making your travel time a lot longer..

That's why you have friends, or money to pay for courier.

Most pirates have alts that go into empire space and purchase things for them. You can carry up to battlecruiser-sized ship in a hauler. For battleships you'd need a freighter but typically you'd just train an alt to fly the ship as it would take less than a week.
It is inconvenient when you're an outlaw and don't know the territory very well and jump into high sec by mistake. Then faction police starts shooting at you, but you can tank it in some ships. For leaving high sec there is a warning message that would pop up. But there isn't a warning the other way around. I've lost some ships this way. But it is true that a lot of players find security status penalties rather severe and keep away from low sec piracy. If it was up to me I'd completely do away with it, have it only for high sec suicide gankers, because it really serves no purpose but only punishes people for engaging in pvp where they are supposed to do it anyhow.

While that would remove one of the only two constraints that currently keep piracy at bay somewhat(and an important warning system to people carebearing in a low sec area when they don't yet know the locals), i share the sentiment because it would also remove the first strike advantage that people who decided not to care about it(read, pirates) have over people that do (like anti pirates). Hopefully that would boost anti piracy up to levels where the division between pirates and non pirates in low sec would get back in balance a bit again so that it was once again profitable to run resource gathering operations there. As things stand, resourcing in low sec is a waste of time. You are much better off staying either in high sec or push straight on to 0.0.
Note that this is not a sneer at pirates. Just a statement of economics. There just isn't enough reward at present to justifiy the current level of risk involved in working low sec.

Why yes, it is inconvenient being a pirate.

Actually, there is a warning; most people turn it off after seeing it the first few times they go through a gate into a highsec system. There's no way to turn it back on that I know of, other than resetting your settings.
