Okay, since I started playing eve, there has always been this myth about insta-locking. Okay, maybe it's not a myth but truly there is no such thing as insta-locking since there is slight amount of lag no matter how loaded the environment is. So my question is, what sensor resolution is considered strong enough to insta-lock and what are some practical ways to achieve insta-lock.

sensor strength does not effect lock time, that is just how hard you are to jam. scan resolution is what determines how quickly you lock onto things.
why do you want to lock something that quickly? i'm going to guess that you are trying to tackle someone before they warp off. my suggestion then is to fly a frigate and if just being in a frigate isn't enough, you can go crazy and use a sensor booster with a scan resolution script.

Everyone has a different standard but 4 digit scan res is generally considered good. If you are in a heavy dictor you are going to need people to remote sensor boost you to get a fast lock speed.

I find myself bubble camping with interceptors that seem to be able to fly outside the bubble even b4 totally uncloaked. Insta-locking with a huginn would be ideal. Just don't know if it's possible.

Then your Hic isnt properly fitted. Mine has 880 Scan Res with gang bonuses and own Sensor Boosters.
Can catch most blockade runners except the wise ones and some Prowlers.
And for instalock, I would go for 1200-1500 Scan Res. (Even Lachesis can attain 1210 with 3x SB II).

its going to be difficult to lock an inty that quickly because their sig radius is so small. your best bet is still with the sensor booster+scan res script. you could use multiple ones, but thats starting to waste precious midslots.

Dont forget the joys of the remote sensor booster. Have a couple of people in gang with one of them and you can get a rapier or huginn to a pretty insane lock time.

700 is good enough to catch most HAC before they can get away, can also get pods pretty regularily. You'll need at least 1200ish if you want to catch an inty w/o a bubble though, with 24ish sig radius.. unless they pop MWD on, then they're the size of a cruiser and 700 or so works, assuming you have a way to slow them down or keep up with them to use the lock for anything :) _______________________________________________ Minmatar will always go faster than you, get over it. |

Is there a hard coded minimum lock time to protect shuttles and stuff? with decent skillz and piles of sensor booster 2s i can't get my locktime beneath about half a second. [IMAGE REMOVED] |

The returns are diminishing. Twice the scan res doesnt mean half the locktime, its much less.

how do you get a timing accurate to under half a second? i guess your running some maths there, care to share the formula?
i used to run an insta-lock ceptor. it took under a second to lock a pod. i say "under" cos i could never time it, damn thing was too fast. i'd love to know exactly how fast it really was Because sometimes you just have to go back to your roots: [2005.02.20 01:08:03] (combat) Your Civilian Light Electron Blaster perfectly strikes Serpentis Smuggler, wrecking for 20.3 damage. |

Yeh you kinda reach a point were the lock time is less to do with the ship and more to do with the little bit of lag when you lock somone and it displays the lock and activates any active modules on it.

T = (40000/X)/(asinh(Y)^2)
Where: X = scan resolution of your ship Y = sig radius of the target T = the time to lock.

A stiletto full of SB 2s and signal amp 2s still has a noticable pause between clicking and locking a pod or something, albeit a very short one.
- Stiletto with max skills, 4xSBooster2, 3xSAmp2 has a scan res of 4514.6mm - A pod has a sig radius of about 25m (is it 25? i forget) - The lock time is .57 seconds, and you can't get it much lower than that against a small target.
check it out here.
i've had a play, and basically it's impossible to instalock pods. which answers my question :] [IMAGE REMOVED] |

i usually got for abut 2k scan res or just over if im tackling. A max skilled ceptor with a t2 SB can usually manage that. -------

Same as you need for a pod, which is to say it's impossible.

Stiletto, scram, 3 boosters, 2 sig amps you'll lock a shuttle, but your scram wont turn on fast enough.

A couple of years ago before the stacking nerf we were useing a tempest that had sensor booster 2's as well as being remote boosted by a blackbird with a full rack or remote boosters (the tempest then had stupidly high scan res then) and we were still struggling at times to lock shuttles

I have a Stiletto with over 4200 scan res (without remote boosting) and shuttles/pods can STILL get away if the pilot spams 'warp to' on a celestial object.
No such thing as instalock. There's a 'curve' so as low as you get, you can never reach 0 seconds.

you also have to take into account lag, even when the game seems to be lag free there can be a tiny amount and this will make a difference on whether you will lock the shuttles and pods and inties or not

994 scan res, but it make little difference from 700 tbh.

1-2 sensor boosters II on it with 2 scan resolution scripts, 1-2 guys remote sensor boosting you. You should get close to 2000 sensor resolution, 1000-1200 is interceptor with no sensor booster.
