In LOTRO it was called a "hitching".
You are moving around and suddenly the game freezes for a second or 5. I noticed year-old thread on this issue here. It seems to start after 30min to an hour of playing like someone else said in an old thread.
I don't get this in EQ II, and I think the LOTRO problem either disappeared or is lessened the last time I played a few months ago.
This problem is very annoying. It happens just sitting around anywhere, interrupting my typing as the entire screen freezes, then the chat quickly scrolls to catch up with the activity.
I have an AMD Opteron 146, ATI x800 (longing for an upgrade for premium graphics), and two HDs (SATA 200 GB and older one cant remember). I use Roxio Perfect Disk 8 to defrag/optimize (even the pagefile on every reboot). I recently did the entire two HDs a month ago with PD 8.
I use onboard RealTek sound. My game doesn't crash as the RealTek sound thread sticky here talks about so I didn't install the MS Realtek update.
My Windows Update is automatic notification which I do at least once a month.
I will paste my DXDiag in the next reply and next as room requires.

Been playing few hours with game sound off and that didn't help... I did a complete reinstall of my graphics driver using Driver Cleaner Pro for another issue as well before playing for the day.

Sounds similar to my problem. After about 30 min of play, entire games gets really jerky, freezing for several seconds then rushing to update, then freezing, etc. Completely unplayable. I've had to force-power down the computer just to get going again. I'm on a MacbookPro

Here is my FRAPS on YouTube of this problem.
Is this EVER going to be resolved if it has been since like early 2007 or more from what I have seen on this forum??

This sounds similar to what I notice, only for me my cpu usage spikes to 100% every ~50 seconds or so (very regular) for a second or so (as shown in task manager - performance). It doesn't happen at first, I've not noticed how long after I start EVE that it begins. I've tracked it down to EVE (exit EVE and it goes away immediately, closing all unnecessary programs/processes didn't stop it).
It's very annoying and makes me reconsider extending my trial account.

Edited by: Pecunya on 23/01/2008 22:05:21 Search for stutter, jerky, freeze, freezing. Plenty of threads. Maybe some answers. Try closing the Rookie chat channel:
Common causes of a regular stutter (In two groups):
Eve client problems: - Busy chat channels open. - Too many cache files in Eve's cache directory. - Cache files stored in a bad place (Complex directory structure or something).
Your PC problems: - Aggressive virus scanner running in the background. - Thermal shutdown of the CPU. - Sound driver compatibility (god knows why). - Windoze dualcore bug - patch available from M$ and is also applied via windoze update I think.

Common causes of a regular stutter (In two groups):
Eve client problems: - Busy chat channels open. Closed out Rookie chat...no fix - Too many cache files in Eve's cache directory. Been doing it since day one of my trial account - Cache files stored in a bad place (Complex directory structure or something). G:\CCP\EVE...nothing complex there
Your PC problems: - Aggressive virus scanner running in the background. Just Mcafee which I never have problems with elsewhere. - Thermal shutdown of the CPU. Doesn't run hot - Sound driver compatibility (god knows why). Sound on or off no difference. - Windoze dualcore bug - patch available from M$ and is also applied via windoze update I think. Opteron 146 not dual core

I have the same problem really but the hiccups are no longer than half a second or max 1 second, yet still annoying. I have quite a powerful computer setup and good knowledge in optimizing but i cannot figure out what's wrong:
-Intel QuadCore 2.4 GHz . -2 Gb RAM (very fast and expensive memory) . -BFG Nvidia 8800 GTX FC2 (fabrically clocked) . - 320 Gb SATA-II hard drive (7200 RpM, partitioned - OS, pagefile and game all on different logical drives) . - Realtek sound device (Asus P5E3 onboard device)
- Windows XP SP2
I have tried with minimal settings but hiccups were still present so it's not that. I have everything on, cache on normal and rest on high/extreme. In my Nvidia panel I have special settings for EVE. I run at 8xAA (multisampling) and 8xAS. I have a 24 Mbit connection to internet.
So.. the problem is either within my HD or soundcard? My sound doesn't stutter when graphics do, my HD is quite silent all the time.
I play at averagelly 180 fps in space, around 70-90 fps in heavy combat.
Suggestions anyone?

There may be some issues with sound... You can try in steps to see if it helps : 1/ disable 'hardware acceleration' and see if it helps 2/ disable the eve sound.
Try running the logserver and filling a bugreport, maybe the freeze shows something in the logserver when it happens.Steps to do so are explained in the 'game developpement' forum in a sticky about bugreports ('how to make a good bugreport' I think it's called). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Pay close attention to particular to the part about multiple processor cores and setting affinity. I believe this fixed it.
