One solution, three words: Limit the BPO's.
Before you crucify me, mark this:
Limited BPO's and copies thereof will promote production and pricing, production will (once again) become a worthwhile occupation. Excessive output of capital vessels such as battleships will come to an end and people will think twice before they buy one. Promotes diversity when I think of it. Cost will be a factor, no more "WTS Scorp @ 60 mil".
I know there are people out there who would go to great lenght arguing against this in every possible manner but it's logic in it's essence. The ships we see in EVE originate from different design bureaus and shipyards, players buy BPO's from these shipbuilder NPC corps which are licensed. It's pure madness to let somebody pay a one-time fee for a blueprint or license allowing for an infinite number of produced units, generating a more or less unlimited income. This is the sole contribution to todays inflation in EVE, that's what we have to work with.

What's a market without advertisements? Why not setting up an advert box in every station (visible when docked) rentable for a given amount of ISKs per day/week/month(and maybe open to higher bidding) for single players and corps to advertise the wares they produce/trade? In my opinion it would give new depth to markets, add another layer of business decisions and improve the in-game experience.

In my experience, it's the actual goods people are interested in, not who made it. Opens for another idea - should we implement a quality parameter linked to the production skills of the player manufacturing the items? That might make the origin of the items more intersting, perhaps.
That'd add life-time to objects that has to stand wear and tear, like weapons and drives etc, active components put shortly. Good for the economy

I have been reading thorugh these posts and i agree stop the NPC from Placing Buy and sell orders ON MINERALS ONLY
this will stop 1.0 strip mining as there will be no market for the commens in 1.0
atleast (like someone else said) give it like a 3 month test period
also add a Damege to BPO when you use them eventuelly the BPO will wear out (limiting how high they can be researched and how many copy's can be made)

The dropping of loot from pirates should mostly be meta loot, and not the SCC stuff. It is true that atm pirate hunting is disrupting economy a lot. I would like to add that it would be nice if the meta loot was a lot more diverse in stats, and was reduced so as not to compete in value to much with the produced items. In addition meta should be "copiable" using reverse engineering and SCC should only be reverse engineerable into BPCs, not originals that should be given only by R&D system. (R&D needing improvements as well)
I agree with what he said
Enoch Dagor said that when he wants a price he checks the internet or picks up the phone i do agree this is needed a way to look up a system and a station and then see the prices there (you should have to look up each station 1 at the time)
also Jerik Flo'tsam said (and i agree) Pirates and dropped goods As stated previously, Pirates should not drop whole goods. They should drop stuff in three categories: 1. Debris: X units of debris which can be converted into minerals 2. Components: pieces that need to be used for manufacture of basic ship modules (as previously mention by others). 3. Damaged named modules: Modules that need repair before function (very rare)
Harrisdrop said Ore is mined (time) miner Minerals are refined from ore (time-waste-take) Refiners NPC buy Minerals (isk) Trade NPc build Components (isk sink) Components are sold (traders, manufacutres) and given away (agents) i would prefer that the minerals could be made to make components by players over NPC but other then that i like the idear
also ships need to use consumebles like Food,Water,Holoreels etc or just have a maintance fee (weekly based on useage and type of ship) (maybe even both)
also stations need to be smarter they supply things and demand things instead of the way it is now Thank You Paw Sandberg

Edited by: Fto Cruise on 30/06/2004 09:42:12 My only complaint is to do with the NPC commodoties. Before the Castor patch, myself and several of my corp would trade these goods for 2-3 hours after DT. Admittedly the problem there was that trade was really only a valid occupation for a limited time and as such needing some attention. But it was not just tweaked a little, it was severely battered! So much so, that none of my corp now trade in these goods anymore. It was possible to make a little more than mining per hour and that is why we did it. It should be possible to earn more, the more money you have. Increase the amounts NPC corps buy, of trade goods only, to somewhere near where they used to be. This occupation needs some love and attention. Also, PLEASE get rid of minimum buy orders. You cant see them until you have travelled to sell and then they are just really annoying.

Been playing eve about 2 weeks now and a few things market-related spring straight to mind:
1. (touched upon elsehwere) You should be able to have your computer display the best goods to take frmo point A to point B (say you're accepting a mission from ammold to take place in Amamake). You should be able to request the best stuff based on your current wealth, cargohold size and what's available in the station (or current system) that will sell well in the destination station/system (anything wider than system is meaningles for this type of query). If your ship was real it really would have this function built in. Perhaps only put it on Indy ships maybe.. but the function needs to exist.
2. Wherever a market item mentions a location you should be able to Set Destination with a rt-click, currently the detailed market info window doesnt do this and it's damned annoying to have to bookmark the place then retrieve the bookmark (in fact anywhere a location is mentioned your ship computer would naturally allow a Set Destination)
3. Market info should be available from anywhere, including in space. I heard a rumour that this was going to happen? If I can get stocks on my mobile phone, I'm pretty sure that a spacecraft in the distant future could get market info while in transit :o)
Addicted to the game, regardless !

This isn't really market related but i think its a good suggestion anyhow. I've only been playing for about a month or so and I've noticed that there is not an ability to choose what kind of mission you are looking for from your perticular agent.
For example: If my agent were to offer a list of possible jobs to do versus just saying do this and well give you Isk.

Limiting the blueprint copies and originals would be easy enough froma roleplaying point of view too, megacorporations own the copyrights and wouldn't approve of their market for ships being shot to hell by excess copying and would motion the SCC to act on it.

see my thread at this location for suggestion on limiting the ME and PE research to 31 levels that may be applied to a BPo.
This will reduce demand for research slots and eliminate 500 ME research jobs whose sole purpose is to keep control of the research slot.
It will also better reflect reality ... even diminishing returns does not capture the reality that, at some point, redesigning how the product works is better than trying to make its production more efficient.

hehe ... Cruise, Cruise. Ole buddy, you were a piker in the trading business. Myself and one other guy in my old corp traded these goods for the same 2 to 3 hours a day right after downtime. The difference is that we averaged about 10 million per day profit, each.
Castor nerfed our trade goods racket for a darn good reason ... it was injecting too much isk into the economy too fast.
Afraid you need to go back to real work in EVE, or become a ganker (still a favored profession).

I suggest more avenues of investment to add more capitalism to the game, and to address issues of shortages.
I've been serving as the CFO for a corporation which executed an IPO of ownership to our members, raising substantial capital. The concept was - raise an endowment of capital that would work for us so we could reduce or eliminate taxation, and in fact pay a dividend to our owners/members.
It would be a very workable structure, much like real-life, but for one big hole in the game -- there are very few mechanics for putting investments to work. You can invest in BPO's and with little labor get some return. You can invest in loans, but there are no mechanics to enforce their repayment. And of course you can invest in ships and equipment allowing labor to be more productive.
I suggest allowing players and corporations to invest in lab space, manufacturing, and recycling facilities, even in empire space.
The more you invest, the more slots you can create, and the more efficient they can be. Markets will create equilibrium between the cost of making a slot, and the demand of a slot. Creators of slots will be able to use them or rent them to others at a variable price set by seller and the market demand. In the case of lab slots, the delta between the price of a BPO and a BPC will seek equilibrium with the cost of building, maintaining and upgrading a lab slot, which in turn will seek equilibrium between the cost of minerals and the market price of ships. Shortages will become a thing of the past, although prices will fluctuate to clear markets.
(And allowing us to invest Isk in the basic industrial capacity will be another way to drain Isk from the economy controlling inflation.)

/me likes Lums suggestions a lot..
Always nice to see kindred spirits, that also want more RL related finances in EVE.
Adding some comsumptions in some manner to the players, that players can supply each other would also help on general logistics and overall economic growth..
