i would dump those shield hardeners, no poin having a shield and armour tank on a ship thats easily capableof taning armour fine.
i would also cnsider putting a cap booster and web on there, of course since you have an rcu on i assume you dont have advanced weapon upgrades, which will help you a lot. another option would be to dump the mwd (feels he may get killed fo saying it) and go for a dual rep or plate tank. consdering the guns and missiles, hey're not short range like say a megathron is short range. they have a massive fall off you should take advantage of.
ohh and since this seems to be a pvp ftting, where is your warp scram? if this is a ratting fit, it will do but a BS for lowsec is kinda overkill, you would do better in a cruiser because they're more maneuvrable and cheaper. rupture is an awesome ship, so is phoon but it needs some good skills to shine

awu 5 , check it out on a quickfit (dont use those things myself) but its a hard ship to fit, it needed the rcu
and like i said, i have tacklers, no need to waste a mid i can use on extra tank vs enemies + gate guns

well the thing is i just got into my phoon, i got about 13 mil Sp and i would never even dream about takeing the phoon into any kind of pvp situation with that little SP(its actuly closer to 8mil or so thats actuly into the ship, the rest is unfocused), i actuly just get enough Sp to be able to use it resonably good for lvl 4 missions(i can FINALY toss out my raven YAY!!). for low sec ratting and even pvp i would recomend the rupture, or if you want something bigger and got more isk, the cane...

i'm not a troll or 'special' , in fact i'm an alt and i've been playing this game for years, a majority in 0.0 w/ pvp focus.
if i need an rcu to fit because i'm a newb, seriously, what would you do different? It seems to me an excellent combination of HP buffer and damage.
Unconventional? yes Stupid? Hardly, atleast i dont think so.
I know, its hard to wrap your head around a non cookie cutter setup, but lets get past that and on to positive suggestions
edit: main is using this w/ 60mil+ SP focused in matar (basically focused in everything) its not that i dont want feeback, its that i dont want it from ppl that will automatically assume i'm a newb and haven't thought this out before hand

ok lets see...
4 dual 425s 4 cruise launchers 1 T2 AB 3 caprechargers 1 large armor rep 2 resist (if you rat against sansha/blood 3 against anything else) 1 DCU T2 2 BCU T2 1 gyro T2
5 curator sent drones 5 Hammerheads
it works like this. warp into the belt. deploy sent drones. fire missile and sents untill the rats are dead. the autocannons are for close range cruisers and such. if you want to you can even trade them for 1 tractor beam 2 salvagers and a cloak.

anyone that suggests you shouldn't do something, simply because you think you shouldn't do something (ie: you have no reason) dont post.
look at it as an armor tank, that throws a bit of resistance buffer in the shields before it has to start tanking
and... ITS ONLY PVP, no ratting setups please

Nathanial, you are correct that a HP buffer is a HP buffer no matter where the resists are - but you have an active tank, not just a buffer.... this means when you click your repairer you are repping armor which does not benefit from resists on your shield. So those two slots are only helping you as long as you have shields left which is like 10 seconds when under fire.

well since you do seem honestly hopeless here is a fittng i planned for mission running, some of t equipment has to be T1 to fit however:
highs: 4 arbalest siege 4 425mm 2
meds: 1 AB 3 cap recharger 2
lows: 3 hardeners (kin/term/explo) 1 damage control 1 pdu 2 1 lar2 1 large accomodaton repper
obviously you will need to swap some of your cap recharge out for EW but you have easily enough cpu for whatever you want. then i would swap out the vestment repper and pdu for 2 1600mm plates giving you some 17k armour (19k with gang bonues). this will make you heavy but with the 20km range on your guns with the falloff it shouldnt be too much trouble. this will also give you enough grid to fit T2 launchers with a pretty large effective hp on the ship.

Edited by: Talasan on 23/01/2008 12:13:34 ok let me start, the phoon is an awesome ship, and by the sounds your sp are not the problem.
You do not need 800mm t2's, dual 650mm and dual 425mm t2's are also good options, so ditch that rcu now
you will do far better not shield and armor tanking a ship, the effective hit points will not be significant when you cannot fit the usual pvp mid mods. If your active tanking , i.e armor rep, you need an injector, a single heavy neut will screw your day up without one
personally, for pvp i like to use this
4 siege T2, 4 x dual 650mm t2 100mn mwd t2, target painter, disruptor, web 3 x 1600mm rolled plates, 2 x EANM t2, DC, BCU t2
5 x ogre II, 5 x vespa ecm
3 x trimark I
tonnes of armor, awesome dps, especially if you use faction torps, and faction EMP (no tracking issues and sig radius issues for the torps), will need cpu implant, or named items to fit. using x5 web helps, phased target painter, and if worst comes to worst use a IFFA DC
if you want a ship to active tank well in gangs use something like this:
4 x arby crusie (i cant use T2 cruise), 4 x dual 425mm t2 mwd, web, disrupt, heavy electro injector 2 x large armor rep t2, 3 x t2 hardeners, EANM T2, DC T2
5 x ogre/berserker T2, 5 x vespa ecm
ACR, 2 x aux nano pumps
if your not a newb, then you would know that shield + armor tanking is dumb, even if you are in a gang, its nice to be able to web, and put a point on something as well as keep your own cap stable

I've never flown a typhoon in my life but IMO it looks built to use neuts... like:
high 4x Siege 3x Heavy Neut
med MWD/Web/Scram/Cap booster (vital)
lows Plate up, add some hardeners and one active repper (as big or small as your PG allows, to save HAVING to repair at stations)
rigs probably +armor amoutn rigs
drones probably ecm drones, your torps will be enough

what ya think?
You have one empty low slot, that alone should tell you something is wrong. The two shield res mods just don't give you much benefit, something like extra 7k effective hp against uniform damage, equal to maybe 3 cycles of your 1 large repairer. Your repairer will run for like two and half minutes if you have shield hardeners turned off and no need for mwd. That two and a half minutes translates to something like 40k extra effective hp. All in all, in optimal conditions and repping all your cap, your setup has a total of 100k or so effective hp, while a plated buffer phoon has 140-150k, full tackle (nice to have just in case, you're flying a close range ship anyway), painter, mwd and no trouble with cap.
Now, since you want to go the active tank route, imo you should remove the invulnerability field and rcu, downsize the guns to dual425, put a grid rig in, toss a plate or two in the lows and a cap booster in the mids. I'd also remove the em hardener mid and slap a web on, often your tacklers don't want to go into web range while you most of the time will. You'd end up with 90-100k effective hp without repping and and you could run the rep a lot more, even if you get neuted or need to use your mwd a lot.

DRROOONNEEESSS!!!!
what ya think?
A few thoughts.
1. I like the idea of the shield hardeners giving you an extra buffer before having to use your repper. But with only those hardeners, you don't get much of a buffer and when that's gone you can't run your repper for very long. I would drop the hardeners for a cap injector and something else; you'll lose some of the shield buffer, but you'll be able to run your armor repper a lot longer so you'll win out in the end. For your second mid, I would put in either a web/scram (in case your tacklers go down) or a tracking computer with a tracking script.
2. Good call on the Target Painter. I'm still suprised by how many people don't use these. They help both missiles and guns do more damage so you can't lose.
3. Drop the 800s for dual 650s. You'll lose a little range and a little raw damage, but the extra tracking will help you out a lot and you'll probably be able to drop that RCU.
4. It's tempting to not fit a MWD to avoid cap issues, especially if you're a gate camper (which you may or may not be). But on a ship that uses capless weapons it's almost sin not to have one. Good call.
5. You seem to be missing a low slot module, which I'm assuming is due to your tight fit. If you don't have enough CPU free for a damage mod, try a tracking enhancer; they take less CPU and still increase your damage by letting you hit more.
Quote: DRROOONNEEESSS!!!!
6. QFT. You've got a huge drone bay, put it to good use. I'd suggest a good mix of damage, EWar, and logistics for patching up buddies after the fight. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

The reason people are automatically saying "drop the shield hardeners" is because the SECOND you lose your shields the effect from those 2 modules is effectivly moot, zilch, none. Where as if you fit a scram, cap injector, or basically ANYTHING else, even a tracking comp, your gonna benefit alot more than those 2 hardeners...
The simple, plain, un-edited truth, is that if you are trying to use a shield and armor tank on a battleship, and people are calling you an idiot because it does not work, no amount of SP will change this fact, so either take the advice or realise the error of your settup in a more expensive manner.

using NOS/Neuts: paper based DPS will suffer - but you will have more suvivability. and their tank will break faster. You can also neut out pesky inty tacklers which seek to keep you on the gate while the sentries rip you a new one.
Dual LAR for sentry tanking dude, its a false econemy not rigging it. As it will likey pop alot sooner. (unless you are baited and blobbed on day 1, in which case your bonned and outa pocket anyways)
