To those who don't know: 1.0 - 0.5 Pretty Darn Safe ( Tritanium, Pyerite, Mexallion & Isogen ) 0.4 - 0.1 PvPers can kill innocents anywhere apart from within sentry gun range (All of the above minerals + nocxium ( in larger concentrations) 0.0 Anything goes however: corps work together in large alliances , but npcs are very tough ( All minerals in the game)
Now miners only extra reward in 0.4 -0.1 is larger amounts of Nocxium. Does anyone think that risk is justified for mineral that is worth about 300 a unit. A full can of hedb ( most expensive mineral in 0.1) is worth roughly 2m, I make hemo and Jasp about 1.9m and 1.7m.
A full can of scord is roughly worth 1.3-1.4m. So it appears that a 0.1 miner can make about 40% more than a 0.8 miner( however running costs of guns vs NPCs means that some Turret slots can not be applied to mining)
In addition it takes a very small group or even a singular pirate to wreck the profits of a 0.4 -0.1 mining group over and above what is made in 1.0-0.5.
However on the plus side a 0.4 -0.1 mining group can open fire on ore theives. ( These guys are usually extremely rare)
And let us not fool ourselves the people looking for a quick solo or small group gank & podding for kicks are looking for miners in 0.4-0.1 ( they are an easy vulnerable and economically weak target ,I should know :( )
However in 0.0 gneiss perhaps the poorest of the '0.0' ores is going to make about 7m a can going all the way up to Ark which will be making in excess of 25m+ a can. In 0.0 corporations tend to be clanned togther in large alliances. In addition to deal with NPCs I believe tactics used by 0.0 miners is to have a singular battleship 'harvesting' a weak chain of weak cruisers/frigates while comrades mine in ships as small as cruisers .In dealing with pirates, alliances use there large numbers and the small number of entrances to stop the smaller incursions that their poorer 0.4-0.1 brethren have to deal with. Obviously the 0.0 miners will have most difficulty transporting their ore to market. But the ore is very light so I imagine a fair amount value wise could be placed on ship rigged for blockade running. The main worry of 0.0 miners I think is getting in and out of 0.0 and possible alliance wars.
Please correct my points if ya like. The prices are the ones in my spreadsheet and are Heimatar a few days ago.
However the main point of this discussion is to outline the worth ( or lack thereof of 0.4-0.1 space )

Yes, it's ipso facto pointless to even have 0.0 to 0.4 imperial space.

I agree there is no reason whatsoever to head out into semi-insecure space, even the NPC's are still pitiful.

All that needs to be done to pull people into .1-.4 is to put one unit of Zyd in each Jaspet refine and two units in each refine of Hed and Hem. it wouldn't give you a ton of Zyd but it might be just enough to interest people.
Plus stop battleship mining in high sec space. At least stop it in .8 and up.

Bahahaha. If you succeed in killing them, it is a one time only happening.
The next time they will watch map radar, they will watch local, they will log off instantly and fly to a safe spot for free.
So no. PvP'ers can't kill innocents anywhere there. -- Stories: #1 --

That's a good suggestion.
Frankly, you need nearly the same setup in 0.4 as you do in 0.0 -- which begs the question: why don't you just go to 0.0? :)

Lack of availability I guess. If your corp is not in a 0.0 alliance, then you do not have easy access(Apart from buying passes I suppose) to 0.0 space. So you hit 0.1-0.4 space. ____________________ -Zerkbahl Venomflame |

The only thing I would add is that the 0.4 - 0.1 miner is less likely to find the belts decimated the way they are in higher security. The minerals aren't much more valuable but its likely there will be more of them.
And a saavy miner knows enough to get out of the belts when a known pirate enters the system. --------------

Already done, by me. I wanted greater purpose for 0.4-0.1 space, devs gave some half-backward answer. SolarisCCP (Who the hell is she anyhow?) agreed there should be better ore, but that was about the only worthwhile response.

The economics of 0.1-0.4 mining is simply a matter of balance... For example, if replacing your ship and clone costs you 10 million, but you make an extra 1 million isk per hour, it is more profitable if you can mine for more than 10 hours before being killed by a pirate.
The other thing to remember is that refining facilities in lower sec systems are often less efficient so if you do not have good refining skills, the extra lost minerals in each refine may cancel out the extra value of ore you mine. Hauling the ore to a better system may not be worthwhile either, as hauling is lost mining time so reduces profitability.

Yes you can, the fact that you cant always catch them does not meen it cant be done. Skill is one thing, possibility is another.
Abandoning a full can meens quite a bit of time being wasted as oposed to mining in higher security space, ergo the original posts point stands.

Mining? Mining? What's that?
As for one unit of zyd in a Jaspet refine... I get as much as that from any of 100 different items that drop as loot off of NPCs in 0.1-0.4 ...
I can fight NPC ships in a cruiser in a 0.2 sector and make some isk from bounties as well as get a ton of minerals from melting the loot..
I timed it once.. about 800K per hour in bounties, and about the same in mineral worth from melting loot (and actually get some zyd/mega in the process)... and alot more interesting than licking a rock.. plus, if I'm jumped by a PvP, I have the option of just making them go boom. :)
In fact, some guy in a Kestrel jumped me just the other day in a belt.. boom they went, after a quick sensor adjustment and stasis web. (Jeez those little ships can pack a punch, though. :)

Q: What do you call a solo miner in 0.0 space? A: Dead.
That's pretty much why people mine 0.1-0.4. The spawns in 0.0 space are too tough for a single ship to deal with unless it is rigged for pure combat... which means no mining. The harder spawns are impossible to solo at all, unless you just want to hit and run to get bounties and don't care about the loot. In 0.1-0.4 space, a battleship can mine with at least 5 or 6 Miner 2s and use heavy drones and maybe 1-2 guns to swat NPCs. Unless you get a cruiser spawn the drones can do the job all by themselves. So by mining 0.2 space you can get better ore, better bounties for NPC rats your drones swat, and better loot. The drawback is that you risk PC pirates, but that's not too serious a risk if you're careful and insure your ship.
Besides, a cruiser is WORTHLESS in 0.0 space but in 0.1-0.4 it can still mine in relative safety. Imagine a group of three Thoraxes with full loads of heavy drones mining in a group... in 0.1 they'd easily survive, but in 0.0 they'd be vaporized. So for the non-battleship crowd 0.1 is as low as you CAN go and still do any serious mining. (Ninja mining doesn't really count because you're running more often than digging and can't use a can, so your profits are minimal)

Bah, I can solo mine in 0.0
You use 9 praetor drones and 3 neutron blasters, you can figger out your own medslot setup but I'd recomend at least on F-90 sensor booster.

Maybe you CAN solo mine in 0.0 with 9 heavy drones AND 3 guns, but that doesn't exactly leave you a ton of room for mining lasers...
The drones alone would protect you in 0.1, letting you fit 3 more Miner 2s. And you'd lose less drones, too. (Praetors ain't cheap...)

Well I do the same thing but thats not the point. We are talking about how to get more people out in low sec. Most of the people we are talking about are hardcore miners. The aren't going to hunt NPC's so your sugestion won't work to get them out there.
Which is why I suggested the slight change in ore composition. To get the miners to move.

The main reason I started this topic that I am/ or people in my corp getting invovled in more and more serious fights on an almost twice weekly occurance in 0.4-0.1 mining fleets.
Where did all this come from? I seem to remember mining peacefully for a loong time but in the last 3 months things seem to be getting more vicious.

Mining fleets? That's probably it right there. If you have enough ships to make a big blob on the map pirates will likely come calling (especially now that it's so hard to camp a 0.1-0.4 gate). Pirates are like the rest of us: the big groups go out in 0.0 and the smaller groups head to 0.1-0.4 space to avoid the alliances. And since sentry guns got boosted to 150km gate ganking is a lot harder than it was.
I've never been bothered by a pirate in low-sec space while solo, but fleet operations ARE probably a lot more dangerous now. On the other hand, there aren't any ore thieves so you could always just use a couple ships per system to avoid standing out on the map... or just tell a bounty hunting corp where you'll be mining and see if they want to set a trap for any rats who show up.

I agree Nepereta, there's a lot more pirating against miners and haulers in 0.1-0.4 recently.
I think its a sign that more people are turning to pvp as a way of getting rich quicker. Probably because there are more people moving out into 0.1-0.4 to try and find something decent to mine, which makes it more attractive for pirates to cruise the belts there.
I wonder how long it will be before the number of pirates makes it profitable for vigilante patrols to operate in these systems...

me and a friend tried mining in a 0.2 the other night it was a hell of a night, having to deal with rats in a mining setup,
then we had a player rat turn up
and things got alot worse, i ended up losing my thorax and my m8 had to give him 2mill so we lost money, but it was a intresting night at least
so personly i dont think its worth it, just head to a out of the way 0.5.
i wont be mining in a 0.4-0.1 untill i have a BS --------
