I am new to the game and this may be the wrong forum for this post, but I am in the need for a little help. I play games to have fun, and if I don't have fun playing, then there isn't much point in playing. I think this game has some sweet potential, but I think it could be more fun than it is. What I am wondering is if I am doing something wrong (probably). What I would like to do in this game is either 1) Be a fighter and hunt or 2) be a scientist and research. Now I have played lots of RPG's in my day so I know that it takes time to get to where you want. But atleast in most RPG's to get to where you want, you gotta do stuff that is somewhat in the range of what you want to do. In this game, it seems as if my only option to make money in the beginning is to either Mine or Courier. I think those two things are very very boring. Courier consists of setting a destination, set Autopilot on and walk away and come back to your PC. Not fun. Mining: go to an asteroid, turn mining laser on, walk away from PC and then come back. Granted I know you must "look out for dangers" but still, u get my point.
What I wanna know is, is there something more to my early characters life other than mining or courier missions, that makes GOOD money. Hunting NPC pirates doesn't make nothing (2-3k ISK is not worth it). It seems as if I can't make over 200,000k ISK in any decent time. Agent missions seem to consist of just courier missions. Am I missing a big portion of this game (probably)? I would like to have some fun with this game. Thanks for the help.
P.S. I think the community is great, one reason why I wanna give this game a chance.

Do agent missions for the navy, that's all kill missions. Go to low secure space for better bounty pirates or trade on the market as a reseller, buy modules people are throwing away cheap and resell them for more, there or at other locations. How that makes you money I'll leave to you to figure out.

Edited by: Silverlancer on 25/03/2004 02:40:06 Once you get a cruiser, things will be much more interesting. To get a cruiser...
1. Join a corp... or...
2. Hunt more powerful NPC rats with a frigate like a Merlin or Kestrel in 0.4 space. Much more loot, much better bounties.
3. Can mine with an indy and a frigate. Boring, but in a few hours you'll have your cruiser.
If you don't want to do these, just message me in-game and I'll help you out

Hmm, when I started playing shortly after launch I killed a couple of NPCs in my Ibis with the noobgear, bought two 75mm rails, killed some more, bought a Condor after only an hour or so, then hunted more NPCs with that until I could afford a Merlin and so on. Starting your character in EVE is the best part IMO, or it was at launch anyway when there was noone to boost your character in any way.
It took me roughly two weeks to get into a cruiser, and I had lots of fun doing it (no mining). These days it should go much quicker.
Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes some nublar, wrecking for 1155.0 damage. |

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I'll stick to killin some NPC's right now. It just seems like it is takin' a long time to get money. I can't really kill any of the higher level bounties just yet cuz I have just a small frigate. And it seems like I am spending a lot on ammo. Maybe I'll put back on my noob canon to save on the ammo and start killin NPC's to maximize my profit. I really want to stick with this game. Once I get my cruiser and start researching, I know it'll be sweet!! So you guys in the game some time.

The bounty is nothing...I can make good money (I don't know how much) off the loot. All you have to do is reprocess the loot that you can't use or has no market value. Some items actually give you Megacyte and Zydrine when you reprocess them, but even getting the lower level minerals is worth it. In most cases reprocessing is worth 10x as much as selling the item on the market.
Oh and find an agent that gives you more kill missions. It takes a few tries, but I found a legal agent in Nakatre (lvl 1, Quality 0) that gives me plenty of kill missions...she's a Legal agent or something like that.
Another tip on selling minerals that you get from reprocessing...look for the best mineral prices and don't quick sell, for the most part ppl take advantage of the newbies and try to buy minerals at 1/2 accepted value.

Mining is the fastest way to get money but by far not the only one. Get yourself a nice fighting ship and hunt npcs. Either sell or recycle the loot you get. You can make quite a lot cash that way and it's way more fun.

Find friends and do everything together - you can make more isk as a group than going solo.
This acheives several things:
You get to know the game through shared knowledge You get to make some great buddies You can handle bigger NPC's if you work in a group and therefore make more isk/get better drops.
Oh, and train your learning skills upto at least 4 as soon as you can.

ok, thnx everyone. I never thought of reprocessing the loot. You need a special skill for that though right? I'll try putting some of my loots out on sell order and see if I can sell some for better price. Thnx!

All you need to reprocess loot is Refining skill at level 1, and be docked at a station with a refinery. Of course, at level 1, your efficiency will be a bit sucky, but you can do it.
Oh, and welcome to Eve

Make friends with a long time player and have them refine the loot for you. Yes there is a trust issue but almost all long time players wouldn't take a little isk from a new guy. Hell contact me in game I think I have a merlin somewhere in fed space from about 8 months ago.

If you are centered on fighting:
Like already mentioned, don't forget the navy agents. They will give you much more kill missions than courier missions. (Hopefully it's so with lvl1 agents, too).
Making money out of research is nothing for a newbie, sorry.

Oh, and when recycling loot:
It's allways better recycling a stack of more items of the same time. You get more minerals. Has something to do with maths and rounding. Thats even more important when you are recycling items that contain some zydrine/megacyte.

1. refining loot does not take skill. I dont have it and i could refine if i wanted to.
2. refining will not yield 10x the market worth of items. If it would, i'd buy up all your items at 9.9x market worth, thus making the market worth equal to reifning yield for a high level refiner.
3. the loot from low grade NPC's may not sell well, but once you have progressed to med and high level NPC's it will make you more then the bounties will.
4. Join a good corp and the immediate need for isk will fade away for a bit. Most corp accepting new players will buy you enough skills and a nice ship to keep you going for a while. They might ask you to mine or do missions in it tho. Some corps however will let you do more fun stuff to earn them isk or will organise some fun stuff to balance out the mining time.
All in all, going solo means you will probably have three options for now: A. Dont get rich anytime soon. B. Have some great unconventional idea and get rich soon. C. be an ore thief and get rich and be KOS to everyone soon.
Now i would not advise option C, matter of fact i would advise joining a corp. _______________________________________________
