I've tested this on both the Premium and Classic Trinity clients.
The default Overview settings do not have stargates checked as visible, which means that they are effectively invisible to new players who don't know how to configure their Overview settings properly.

I know this because I'm a returning player, and when I installed Trinity on my system and started playing again, the stargates weren't on the overview.
A few days ago, I installed Classic on my old iMac, and once again, the standard default settings had stargates unchecked.
Also, I've had to tell new players joining my corp how to check stargates in their overview, because they couldn't see them with default settings.
Finally, I just now (five seconds ago) loaded the Default >> Standard settings in my client, and the stargates vanished from my overview.

The tutorial asks you to go to a different system within the first hour or two of playing the game. At that point, stargates become relevant. It's likely that new players will have discovered how to use the overview, but not how to configure it, and many of them won't think to right-click an icon in space.
Bottom line... having them not in the overview by default seems counterintuitive and wrong to me. But hey, it's no skin off my back; I know how to use stargates. If it's an intended feature, I guess someone knows what new players need better than I do.
