I just got into a Caracal and have a decent setup I'm getting parts for. I've been wanting to get a salvager since everyone seems to be recommending it. Would it be worth it to lose an Assault Launcher to be able to fit a salvager onto the ship?

Are you missioning? Then yes. The rats will die sooner or later, and you'll be making much more money.

I'd say no, most of the time if I run missions I start sniping, and end off killing stuff that got close. So my wrecks are often like 60km from eachother, and worth about 500-1500m3 worth of salvage and loot. (lvl 4s)
So flying around looting is not only damn annoying while fending off ships, it also is extremely slow as a single salvager takes a while to succeed, flying to wrecks is very slow, and there's little cargobay space to loot.
So I like to have a seperate salvaging ship, a destroyer with tractors, salvagers, AB, cargo expanders and cap rechargers is great. A BC can be even better, like a Hurricane, fast, agile, enough slots for speed, space and looting.
I'd use a seperate ship.

I find a frigate can also be a real good salvager, depending on how many high slots it has. Currently a have a few Rifters fitte the following way in key "mission stations" scattered all over the place:
High: 3x salvager I 1x tractor beam I
Med 1x afterburner 1x small capacitor booster 1x small capacitor battery Low
3x cargo expander I
It's dirt cheap, it's fast, and it has reasonable cargo capacity, epecially if you consider that most salvaged items tend to take very little room. The small capacitor booster is really unesessary, but I found one in the loot and helps me not cap out when I have the everything going at once. It's also real easy to fit in any of the industrial ships.
You could go even cheaper then that with a frigate with just 3 high slots and loose one of the salvagers, but make sure you have high salvaging skills.

Most people use destroyers because of the 8 high slots and large cargo space.

I'd say no. If you are going to salvage, bring a salvage ship since the Caracal doesn't have any real utility slots to spare.
Like everyone else already said, use a destroyer to loot wrecks - it's FAR quicker. Before I realized I could do that I was using a kessie and I had to time everything right or I would run out of Cap.

Ima pretty big noob, but I have been running L2 combat missions with a salvager and a tractor next to 3 launchers. I have 3 large shield extenders and a booster. I blow crap up and salvage at the same time having 5 locked targets being an enemy or a wreck. Kinda slow to kill- but I dont have to return w/ another ship to salvage. *I dont blast em til they are within 20km for tractor.

When you get to L4s, it will be much faster to have a dedicated salvage ship (destroyer/bc). Gimping your DPS will slow your kill rate down. Salvaging one at a time isn't that fast. Kill fast, fly away and bring back a salvager that has an AB/MWD on it and can salvage four things at once (4x Tractors, 4x Salvagers) while you zip around.

Don't forget that the deadspace-state of a mission is lifted when the mission is completed, so you can then use MWD as well on salvage ships. ------------------------- No more alt-posts!!!

Missioning lvl4 after the loot size changes I get more than 1,000 m3 in loot and salvage often, and sometimes more than 1,800 m3. I run an Exequror to pick it all up, due to the base 600 m3 extended up to nearly 1,900 m3 with Cruisers V and a few Expanded Cargohold IIs.
2 salvagers, 2 tractors is less than a Destroyer or Battlecruiser will field, but my clustering isn't that good (after the first major cluster, I often have only 2 or 3 wrecks in tractor range due to sentry drones killing rats starting at 85km), and keeping the number of trips back and forth is a massive time saver.

i use 3 ships for lvl 4 missions. first i do a few missions with my killing ship, then i fly around with a destroyer to salvage and put all the loot in a can (and rebookmark on the can) and then i come with an industrial ship to collect all the cans. though planing to upgrade to a salvager marauder, with cargo extenders they should have enough cargo to loot entire lvl 4 missions

Nice picture.
I am newish player and use a Battle Cruiser to salvage. Lots of high slots and tons of cap to run everything. With expanders I get decent cargo space. See my self using a BS given enough time.
