Whenever I first start playing the game I can see the star map fine. At some seemingly random point, the star map will no longer render anything except a dot in the middle, which I assume is me. Solar map works fine. Any known workaround for this?

I get this too and many corp members have the same problem. Black screen like you'd zoomed in too far but you cannot zoom out. Only a relog fixes the issue.

don't use auto pilot. that's how i prevent it from happening. i got this issue a lot when i first started playing and i haven't experiences it once since i stopped using AP. you shouldn't use auto pilot anyway, it'll get you killed. o_O |

Edited by: Nilth Ra on 26/01/2008 14:23:38 The same problem here, and I don't think it's related to the autopilot. It's very very annoying, especially if you're exploring.
Plase fix this damn bug..you can find a lot of other topics referring to the same issue:

I dont think theres been an official response to this problem and it is probably one of the most crippling bugs in the game atm, given that relogging is the only fix and often that's precluded by pesky enemy probers.
I'd love to see this issue bumped until we get a dev response. Ideally something more than "it's a known issue." And instead of a few hundred more newly created threads about it.

I agree this bug is very annoying. Should be fixed ASAP. Can't believe I can't use autopilot or my star map crashes.

Thought I was alone with this one, but I'm getting the same problem too. I thought it might have been a problem with eve launcher but now it seems otherwise...

I've had this a couple of times, it seems to be associated with having bloom on - though not 100% sure, - it works fine after a reboot.

At the moment exploration's impossible for me, because I can't access the map outside a station to check that my probes are covering the whole system, ect.

Also very annoyed with this bug. It seems to have no trigger at all. After a while i tried not opening the starmap unless i was dead in space (no warping etc.) but even then it will go blank after some random event. Grrr.

Thanks for the info, but for the map problem:
1. It's pretty obvious what the problem is. 2. Everyone has it. 3. Thus it can be easily reproduced and by reproducing you'll always get better insight and you know it. 4. It's known since 4 weeks or longer.
So I can't understand why you want us doing all the work filing bug reports about this problem. Otherwise it's ok what you're saying.
And btw, you could consider thourough revision of the map anyways. It has many litte annyoing flaws, and to fix that you have to rethink your concepts, debugging code helps nothing there

Just because "everyone has it", doesn't mean that it is easy to reproduce. And it is very important for us to have the reproduction steps to be able to find the issue, nail down what is causing it and fix it.
What I'm trying to do is to get people to bug report bugs using the bug report system. If you do, you will get a reply saying that what happened to it. If you get a reply saying that it got attached to an already existing defect, you will know that it is a known issue and we're working on a fix. There are a lot of bugs that have been reported via the forum and because of that, got lost. Making sure that we are aware of all the bugs and have them all in our defect tracking system is very important to us. Also, if more than one person is reporting a bug, we will get more information about the problem making it possible for us to connect the dots and find the reproduction steps faster. This and a lot of other reasons is why it is better if we get more people and multiple reports on the same issue.

I got the problem to happen while I was looking at the map. I was looking around during while autopiloting to another system. I heard on the audio "auto pilot jumping" and the map up and disappeared. So it appears to be related to system jumping.

I'm really hoping that there will be satisfactory changes in the map.

Don't know if this is exactly the same thing, but I had something similar where the map would show as a solid grey block with white stars but nothing could be selected, strangely enough setting 'region names' from off to on solved the problem, and turning them back on caused the problem to magicly reappear.

I am having this issue as well.
However I've found a hack way to bring the star map back without restarting.
Set it to normal zoom mode, then switch to solar system view. When in warp (only seems to work in warp) hit f10 repeatedly until you can see the stars reappear in the background.
I currently use an Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT

Edited by: Kaldi Intal on 21/02/2008 15:22:12 I got this petition answered a while ago. I haven't tried doing it yet (didn't have the time then and am now experiencing the same problem since I reentered the game). Perhaps it will work for you guys. Let us know.

EDIT: After rereading the response, I think its just a generic response to reload the program. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program since then and still have the same problem. I did notice that there are other explorers reporting this problem. This problem is most evident when I am exploring as well. I do not know if I have the problem unless I am exploring, but something to consider. I do have probes out and analyzing while I am plotting my next route of systems.
Hi.
We apologize for the delay in getting back to you.
Have you tried to clear your Cache folder, to see if that clears the issue? If not, then please press WINR or select the Start - Run option and copy/paste this line into the popping box: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE if you are running windows XP or C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE on Windows Vista. Move all the folders over to a safe location outside of the EVE directory. This resets EVE to its default settings as the game then regenerates the folder upon restart. This can fix many problems within the game.
This also unfortunately clears all your customized options (your bookmarks themselves are stored on our side), so if needed, you can try moving the \Settings subfolder of the original \cache folder back to the one in your EVE directory.
Best regards, GM Thunder EVE Online Customer Support.

This bug, or feature if you like, has been present for some time now. I'll assume that CCP is working on it. Each person appears to say or believe that it is related to something else. Basically: the map has some problems and nobody seems to be certain what the cause is. My corp mates virtually all say that they get it at times and will normally reload to fix.
CCP, any news or comments on whether the culprit code has been apprehended?

I appreciate your efforts, but can I make a sincere suggestion?
Get a better bug reporting UI, seriously. I can't even figure out how to report it. From what I remember, that last time I reported a bug I had to log in to the website and fill out a form from there. Is it too much to ask to get something like the Petition system for bug reporting as well?
And to the forum trolls, spare me the lecture on being lazy. I don't pay to do CCPs work for them, but I'd be happy to report bugs if it were more convenient.
BTW, the star map bug has affected me as well... but the only time it has happened was when I accidentally switched to the Solar System view and tried to get back to the star map. Honestly everytime I've used the Solar System view it has been nothing but problems
