Yet another update to the community created video section ...
Once you are logged in to EVE Insider and go to Download > Video's you can vote for your favorite video's, be it community created, or the movies CCP has provided you with. Here's a direct link to the community video section. Expect another update to the content of this section next week,
In the meantime ... let those video's roll in. If you have a clip you want included there, send an email to [email protected]. Include a title, description, URL to the file and a the name you want credited for the work. Similarly if you have comments on the contents of the videos post on the EVE Message Board (or even on this thread) or send us an email to [email protected]
I'm aware that there are a lot of video's not up there, but we just have to filter sometimes. But please keep on sending those video's ...
Thanks to drunkenmaster for his tutorial below.

Edited by: drunkenmaster on 25/03/2004 16:35:08 Drunkenmaster's quick guide to making your own eve videos.
Ingredients:
1 PC (the more power the better) 1 copy of Eve 1 copy of Fraps 2.0 (preferably paid-for full version) 1 copy of DivX codec 5.1 or higher (ditto) 1 copy of some video editing software (ditto again) some music
here's what I've been using:
3.1Ghz pentium 4 on a 1024mhz FSB (overclocked from 2.4/800 fsb) 2x80Gb ATA-100 8Mb cache HDD's 512Mb PC 3200 DDR Geforce 5600/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 (recently changed) Windows XP Pro Eve
This setup allows me to capture footage from a 1280x1024 windowed client to a 640x512 uncompressed AVI at about 15 fps. (lower res = higher framerate)
Fraps 2.0 full Divx 5.1.1 full Adobe After Effects Pro some music
DivX and After effects are not necessary, but I find them a lot better than Windows Movie Maker and WMV encoding. The price might put a lot of people off, too, whereas Win Movie Maker is free, and fairly easy to use.
Prerequisites:
Set up fraps to record at 25fps, half-size, no audio. Set your capture/screenprint keys to something that eve doesn't use. (I use Insert to record video, and Home to screencap) Make sure you point the video/screengrab output to a drive with a lot of space. Ideally not the same drive as your windows smapfile. (my last video was built from a library of over 70Gb of total footage)
Now the fun begins:
Go out and either get yourself in a lot of trouble, or get someone else in a lot of trouble, and hit your capture key. repeat until you're either out of space, or until you think you have enough footage.
Exit out of Eve (hard to do sometimes, I know, but *force* yourself)
Fraps will name all it's capured files after the program name, and data/time of recording.
I find it useful to check the clips first, and to rename them based on what it contains (eve 2004-03-06 21-09_some sap I podded at a station.avi, etc.)
You can then load your chosen clips into your video editing software, and attempt to build something from them all.
I won't give you a tutorial on using video-editing software, as there are hundreds available on the web already, and most are better presented/illustrated than anything I could put together. Plus, there are several different types of editing software to choose from.
Encoding:
I encode to divx directly from after effects.
I leave most options as standard, and only change the bitrate to make the file both a decent size, and decent quality.
I compile and export my movies at 25fps, despite the fact that I capture at 15fps. .

But here are some do's/don'ts:
Do:
- Pick a piece of music that fits with the style of the video. for close-up fighting, use heavier beat-driven music (techno/rock) etc.
- Trim your clips. If you have 10 second gaps between clips that are just pictures of empty space, it will not hold the viewer's interest, and they'll end up looking at the wall behind their monitor.
- Try to time your transitions/cuts/fades with the music. This is not possible with some of the cheaper (or free) software packages, but it is definitely worth the effort, it makes the music an integral part of your movie, rather than just something that's playing in the background.
- Try to get good compression, without reducing the movie to a generic dot-fight. After capturing, it will already be at half resolution, so the more detail you can keep, the better.
- Try to avoid capturing with your chat windows open. Turning them off increases the framerate, and generally makes the screen nicer to look at, and the less distractions, the better. You can turn off everything with Ctrl+F9, but bear in mind that this will remove the entire HUD, including targetting squares, identification squares, and pretty much everything else. The other alternative is Ctrl+Tab, which will just remove the windows, leaving the targetting/id squares, and will leave you in a better position to fight while you are filming.
- Try to pimp your corp.
- Add humour, if the situation fits. (see advert in last Jokers video for reference)
- Keep your files at a decent size. Most people have a threshold as to how much they will download. I would say that any more than ~80Mb will be pushing it for a lot of people. My last video, I couldn't get below 120Mb, so I cut it in half.
Don't:
- Use a bit of music that someone else has already used
- Use the latest beta version of divx (or whatever) for encoding. I use an old version on purpose, because the chances that people will be able to play it properly are far, far higher.
- Use windows system fonts (Times/Tahoma) for your titles and credits. It makes the video look rushed. Head over to www.1001freefonts.com and pick something that goes with your style of video. It will make it look more polished, believe me.
- Use any music by Britney Spears. If you do, I will declare war on you, and everyone you know.
- Reuse clips. Once you have finalised your movie, find all the clips you used, and annihilate them. Nobody wants to see the same thing twice.
- Use your videos as flamebait/trolling on other corps. Leave the hostility at home, and try to present it in a fairly neutral manner. Naturally, you will be biased towards your own side, but snidey remarks, and insults have no place in here. (there are exceptions, of course)

very good advice from drunkenmaster, and it makes me feel a bit more relaxed knowing i pretty much do everything he suggested
I really admire the devs for taking the time to let the community expand in this field, as everyone loves a good show. We're all just a bit curious what others are doing in different parts of the universe. Some people dont see much action because of their career, or corp or they missed an event or something... so videos are VERY cool

Druken does have the best videos. And he matches the music to the action perfectly. Watch his latest and all the heavy bass beats match missile explosions or ships going boom. And 70's cop show music sadly goes very good with the video. Drunk you are truely a Master (Becareful you may soon have a rabid fan club chashing you around begging for you to make them famous by killing them on video.) |

Edited by: Seleene on 26/03/2004 10:57:25 As someone trying to follow in Drunk's footsteps, I am using the same setup he does now. It may be a few weeks, but I'm finally getting the hang of how to edit using Adobe.

I have a FRAPS of a guy showing up at my gate and asking to be podded, but insisting I use a Cataclysm Cruise missile so he would be properly cremated. The chat text came out pretty good and I'm thinking of using it as the closing scene of my first SPVD vid. -

/me wonders when this turned into a popularity contest.
I don't know about you guys, but I voted fairly cleanly, giving out a few 5 and 4 on how well I liked each individual video. Seeing the average score of 2 or 3 on several excellent videos makes me wonder how many people voted 5 on their favorite and 1 on everything else. ______________

Voted 5 on CCP's "Caldari outlaw" and Fist's "Jokers: the movie".
And I think it's quite funny that CCP are hosting a video of the actions that got Zombies banned...

Good call, Rath, I heard last night that it's been updated.
The divx output will be the same for both programs.
Set the bitrate to ~1000, and make sure the output size/framerate is the same as the input framerate.
Adobe premiere is better for timing stuff to an audio source, but after effects is way ahead for general composition. (imho) .

How come I cant view any of your vids Drunken? :(
All other clips go ok, but yours...the screen loads the first frames saying 'space invaders present', the music starts....screen stays the same the entire vid, the music plays on, but nothing else :/ (using Ace Mega Codec-pack which always has worked for everything else imaginable)
I'm pretty sure I tried all (or both), and the same thing happens. ___________________________ Chicks dig Brutor's |

Nice guide Drunkenmaster!
Personaly I just switched from DivX to Windows Media 9. After testing and comparing WMV produces a much better result and gives much lower filesizes.
The mayor difference is the type of compression where WMV smooths the video rather then pixelating it. This tricks the eye to think that the quality is much better.
You should try it and compare.

Using theme music from various games or movies that do not include singing is more appropriate, in my opinion... It just sounds more right. --------------
