I'm still pretty new here and I'm trying to work my way up through the various mining barges/exhumers. I'm currently at a Retriever. My Corp is a small group of friends with about the same amount of play time. I have been reading everything I can about mining and the ships. The part they all seem to gloss over is fighting the NPC/Pirates. Apparently this is possible, according to some of the guides, but no one goes into any real detail. My current method is not to fight, instead to warp out and come back with another ship that can fight. But this takes time and slows down my mining. I am only working .5 and above while doing this. Would someone please explain how you do this, or link me to a guide? Thank you.

It is very simple. 5 light drones will make quick work of any rats that you might find in high sec, so just get some drone skills.
Once you move into larger barges/exhumers you will be able to load a set of mining drones along with the combat drones, alternating which ones you have out depending on the presence of rats.
FYI - the ore in 0.5 isn't notably better than 0.9, if the rats are giving you a hard time, just move to a 1.0 or 0.9 security system were there are no rats.

You get omber and kernite in 0.5, although it can also appear in small quantities in 0.6 (but no higher.) Set your overview to show omber or kernite roids, since people mine those in high sec religiously. If they've left a tiny scrap of one somewhere in a belt, you'll need the overview to see it unless you want to fly from one end of the belt to another at 90 km/s using your composition scanner.

Human pirates ("pirates") will kill you, because they wouldn't attack if they weren't ready to. So keep your ship aligned to a station. That way you can warp away without turning.
NPC pirates ("rats") should be no problem in highsec. Carry a bunch of Hobgoblin drones in your dronebay to deal with them. Just a basic shield booster should be enough to repair any damage they do. In lowsec the rats get bigger but I would guess your strategy should be about the same. Use Hobgoblin II instead of Hobgoblin I drones and you'll be fine.

Edited by: The Aquilonian on 26/01/2008 00:00:41 @Raveski I'm also mining in 0.7 and 0.6 systems with a Retriever and up to now I never had problems with rats. I have 4 Hobgoblin I and the necessary skills to bring them out all together and engage targets. No problems with a bunch of 3 rats. The shield of my Retriever was never under 50% and there is still a lot of armor on that ship. I made a rule to warp out with 50% of the armor gone but not even rats in 0.5 systems would manage that with my drones attacking them.

Now that you're in a Retriever I'd suggest training up Drones V, Gallente Drone Specialization III, and Drone Interfacing (to III, IV if you can spare the time).
5 T1 light scout drones will keep you safe from any highsec rats, but some of the tougher spawns will still get you into armor. T2 scout drones (esp. Hobgoblins) will rip up any highsec rats and put you in a good position to use a Myrmidon as a combat ship (which you'll need for nullsec ratting later on) ----- My in Eve Profile My BattleClinic Page |

(not responding to poster but expanding on what he said.)
Human players will only attack under 4 situations, 2 if they are pirates.
1. They flip your can, IE take its contents and put it in a jet can of their own in the hopes you take it back. This earns them an agression countdown to destroy your ship. This is common practice in 1.0-0.5 space.
2. If you are in low sec, 0.4-0.1 any player may attack you without concord interfearance. It should be said that 0.4 to 0.1 is considered more dangerous then 0.0 as this is the thin shell between empire and null sec that most pirates with a negative concord standing reside. IE they cant enter empire, and they wont enter 0.0 if they arnt blue to that particular alliance. In this case it is best to be aligned to warp to the closest station for a quick dock.
3 is if you are at war with a rival player corp, in which case they will attack you without concord arriving to punish them.In this case it is best to be aligned to warp to the closest station for a quick dock.
4 is individuals suicide attacking you. Unless your unwise enough to be using t2 equipment on a retriever and or mining super valuable ore the likely hood of this happening is slim. However that said, there is always some idiot somewhere.
NPC pirates will always attack you unless you have possitive rep with their corporation and even then that is not a promise.

Thank you very much for the responses. That gives me a definite direction to work in.

Yeah, basically train up your drone skills and you'll wipe the floor with .5 rats.
