I have trained the destroyer skill, the cruiser and the BC skills to lvl1. It means I can fly them right? So, what are the benefits if any to training them higher? I only fly a destroyer to run lvl 1 missions and salvage at the same time after i kill them. Is there a benefit to training higher in them, or should I keep training in the others like, navigation, gunnery and so on? Thanks in advance! P.S. I just broke 1.1m SP's and 14m in the bank!

Training up to destroyers V is going to open up Interdictors (frigate has to be trained to 5 as well). So that much I can tell ya.
But definitely train up the skills you need in order to fit a ship. Flying an more expensive ship with gimp fittings will make your ship gimp.

Training ship command skills to lvl 4 and 5 will allow you to fly the tech2 variants of said ships...IE the brutix followed by the Astarte.

You guys failed to mention the other important part of having high ship skill levels.
Each ship, in it's description, has a special ability. This ability applies once for each level of the skill you have. ie: brutix with battlecruiser lvl I will get a 5% bonus to medium hybrid turret damage, but with BC lvl V, you get a 25% bonus.

Two things:
1) For ships besides Destroyers and BC you need higher levels to access certain ships, e.g. Thorax requires Gal Cruiser III. You need V to get to T2 variants.
2) Look at the descriptions of the ships: they list the bonus(es) received per skill level of appropriate skill.

This!
You should not be using a Destroyer or Battlecruiser for anything other than salvaging until you have trained that skill to atleast level 3.
You should get level 4 as soon as practical if you are going to continue using those ships frequently.
Level 5 can wait until you are ready for the T2 version, or decide that you want to max out your abilities in those ships.

Truth be told you can probably ignore Destroyers completely after you've trained it to 1. At this point in Eve's evolution they aren't good for much besides some level 2 missions and salvaging. That is, until you're ready to train for Dictors. When will that be? When you're in a nullsec alliance, basically.
Cruisers and Battlecruisers are far more useful to train to 4, if not 5. But IMO before you do that, train a race's frigate to 5. Many T2 frigates only require Frig 5 and a basic support skill or two at 5, and since you'll want to train up those support skills (mechanic, electronics, etc) anyway, you may as well earn the ability to use a T2 frigate class at the same time.

destroyers level 1 is fine for running level 1 missions.
