I mine a lot and tend to stockpile my ore, then once every three weeks or so take my iteron 5 with 30k hold space and hop backwards and forwards trying to get the best prices within 5 or 6 hops for the minerals (I have max refining/faction).
I was considering getting a freighter so I could load up with all my minerals and do one trip, maybe even travelling further afield to get better prices, and maybe do it once every couple of months to save wasting time which might be better spent mining.
Am I likely to get attacked even in high sec by people thinking I am loaded up with goodies, or are they likely to scan me and not bother attacking as there would be nothing worth losing a fleet of suicide ships for?
Would I be better learning manufacturing skills and using my minerals to create items to sell, rather than selling the minerals themselves? If so, how on earth do you work out what items are most valuable to make just to sell?
Any advice please?

If you put too much in one go then you run the risk of getting ganked. That's too much in the way of ISK value not quantity.
It's much harder to gank freighters now but still possible.
One piece of advice is don't AP your freighter and/or use a huginn (IN THE SAME CORP) to web the freighter for insta-warps. -- eve-guides.com All about POSs, Outposts, Exploration, Mining, Invention, EVE Database + much more!! |

i agree on the freighter.. get one asap...if you do the run let a corpmate come along and web you trough the jumps this way you instawarp to the next gate...he also can scout ahead for potential threats (like the privateers). _________________________________________

Jenka,
Couple of things to consider:
What is your set-up with your Iteron 5? Mine has 5 Expanded Cargohold II's in the low slots, 3 Cargohold Optimization I rigs and 2 Cap Recharger II's. Inside I have 12 Giant Secure Containers which means that I can actually haul 49,233 m3. If you are hauling minerals this will increase your productively and profit margin.
Now those rigs cost about 60 million isk each, but if you are thinking about purchasing a freighter then this is just a tad bit cheaper.
Also, are you traveling through low-sec at all? If it is all high sec then you should be go to go. Another thing, what is your output per month? You could probably set-up a contract with either a trader or manufacturer who would net you better profits than what you are getting now.
Last bit, don't rule out sell orders. Take a look at your market and place your minerals 10% higher than the highest buy order in the region. Or, if you are really out in the fringe away from the hubs make a run once a month and still put up sell orders. If you don't need the isk right now it will improve your bottom line in the long run.

Is the 5+ jumps per run, across the entire month in your time worth saving 950mil for a freighter (don't forget to factor in skillbooks and training time)?
Personally, i got my own freighter reluctantly and I'm not crazy about investing nearly a billion in ISK for something that doesn't directly generate profits, but since then I easily made that back plus more with various courier jobs and the expansion of my business allowing me to do deals that weren't possible before.
So really, I'd say if you're doing multiple jumps, and you have one billion in ISK that you can SPARE (keep enough aside for your other investments, ship replacements, etc) that it won't negatively impact you, it's a worthwhile purchase.
Also, do not fly it in low sec, just isn't worth the risk these days, I've had enough close calls myself before shuttering that service. |

Sure. One of the prerequisites of being able to go to warp is being aligned which means you have to be at at least 75% of your maximum speed at the time that you hit the warp button.
Since a web can reduce your maximum speed around 90% of the original once you hit the warp button then have your friend web you (must be in same corporation or Concordoken!) you will insta-warp.
Save having to wait 45 seconds per jump to align and get up to speed.

Edited by: Braaage on 30/01/2008 00:08:42 Webbing a freighter step by step
BTW anyone who shouts exploit can shush cos this has been in game since freighters were introduced and CCP now about it and practically everyone does this (that knows about it).
Going from A to B
Best ship to web with is a Huginn because of it's webbing range bonuses.
- Freighter undocks warps to first gate (no webbing as it doesn't help)
- Webber undocks and warps to first gate
- Both jump - same time or webber first it makes no difference, if you want to use the webber as a scout then jump the webber first.
- Webber starts aligning to next gate (uncloaks - can't lock anyone whilst cloaked)
- Freighter hits "warp to 0" at next gate
- Webber locks freighter and hits the web
- Freighter goes straight into warp
- Webber then warps to next gate
- Rinse and repeat
Two things to note
1) When webber uses the web he gets a 2 minute agro timer so my not be able to jump into next solarsystem if it's a short distance between the 2 gates.
2) Be VERY aware of ships targetting the webber and you having auto lock on and webbing the wrong ship. -- eve-guides.com All about POSs, Outposts, Exploration, Mining, Invention, EVE Database + much more!! |

Also, be advised that webbing the freighter also agression flags the freighter, so that if you have to do a logoffski, the ship will stay in space for up to 15 minutes, and can be probed.
Webbing a freighter does remove some time and risk, but does add a little hazard if things go wrong. _______________________________

If you're both in the same corp then no aggro flag = happy days.

remember you can always do a bring your own materails (BYOM) when getting a freigther. This way you can just buy the bpc's/high end minerals and mine the low end minerals yourself. this way your freigther will cost you a lot les then 1 bil isk

You're assuming the person in question can find a Freighter BPC and components cheaply enough that it makes sense to do so. Unfortunately the Freighter BPC's are jacked up so high due to invention and jump freighter development that there's no real savings to be had. All in all you're much better off finding the best deal off the market. |

Quote: mine the low end minerals yourself
It also assumes that this is the most cost effective option. In fact, you may be better off mining somethign else which sells for more profit, then buy the minerals you need. In other words, mining it yourself does NOT make it free....
