As a noob I know now that Veldspar seems to be be the cheapest ore.
If you have the possibility to mine different ores, which one should you choose? Give a clue on where to go from Veldspar

You'll find omber in a near-by .5 security systems.

Scordite is good to mine if you can't handle the .5 spawns yet. I used to mine Scordite when Omber wasn't available and made almost as much per hour.

Pyroxeres is a very good ore to mine after Veldspar, but I also think mining in a 0.5 may be too much. Omber is also a much larger ore to carry in your ship than the other ores you've encountered so far.

maybe a little hint to to the new miners that are into the business for pure cash:
High Skills in Refining, Refining Efficiency, and the according Ore Reprocessing Skills significantly increase the Mineral Yield when refining the Ore.
So please take out your calculators and do the math on how much money you will get when refining the ore yourself (and selling the minerals to the market - consider your time investment to sell these too !) against buy-orders for Ore (selling it unrefined).
There are several High Level Refiners with Ore-Buy-Orders on the Market - selling to them might increase your profit easily by 20% ! (and giving you more time to just mine - because you don¦t need to haul / sell minerals)
it takes some time to set up an excel sheet with mineral values and refining yields - but if you are seriously into mining this calculation definetely is worth the time invested !

Edited by: Rodj Blake on 26/03/2004 10:12:56 As Ertai alluded to, it's usually not worth refining ore unless you have decent refining skills - you can make more money from selling the raw ore.
As a rule of thumb, the earlier the ore appears in the alphabet, the more valuable it is - ie arkanor is worth more than jaspet, which is worth more than omber, which is in turn worth more than scordite.
The only exceptions to this rule are spodumain and mercoxit, which are rare, high-value ores.
Finally, welcome to Eve, and safe flying

All the advice given in this thread is good. But there is nothing like actually experiencing it. We would be happy to let you tag along on one of our mining ops. No need to join the corp. itself but at least you can get a little low sec mining experience and earn a nice amount of isk while you do it.

You CAN mine in a .5 as a newbe. I did. After the newbe missions equip your ship with 2 miner lasers. (or buy a better ship with 2 minners)
Look over the belts in the system, fine 2 or 3 good spots for omber. Bookmark them. Find an omber asteroid pull up to it, bookmark it, and start to mine. When the rats come, skip the next bookmark, keep going until your holds are full. Often you can fill your hulls before rats come.
The idea is do everything you can to mine and get out quickly. Omber sells so well, it will only take a couple trips before youÆll be able to get another ship or a miner 2.
YouÆll want to get electronics and engineering to 4 quickly most ships wonÆt have the CPU/power grid for 2 miners defaultly.
When I had 2 miner 2Æs, I could fill my holds in about 90 seconds of mining, often I could mine with rats in the system since it took them longer to get me in weapons range than to fill my holds. YouÆll be surprised how much the miner 2Æs will help.
After awhile I bought a second frigate (a gunship), IÆd mine with one ship, and if enough rats popped my 3 scout drones couldnÆt handle, IÆd trade ships. A few more runs, I bought an Industrial and would pop omber to a floating canister, when I had mined what the industrial ship could hold IÆd swap again.
If you use your head you can mine just fine in a .5 system. The profits from omber canÆt be ignored, itÆs worth the risk.
Insure your ship.

Whenever this kind of question comes up, people always recommend Omber. It's valuable, it has shiny asteroids, it must be the best choice, right? I'm afraid I don't think so. (Luvalot and Zhuge hinted at this too)
I used to mine Omber in my Probe, but once I got a giant can and a Hoarder, it didn't take me long to realise that I can get roughly twice as many units of Plagioclase in there as Omber, or four times as many units of Scordite. Not only that, but the speed of mining those ores is roughly in those proportions too (try mining into a can with two mining lasers working different asteroids to see this in action). And guess what? Omber is worth about twice as much as Plagio, and four times as much as Scordite. These proportions don't seem accidental to me. To my way of thinking, if you're a dedicated miner it doesn't matter what the heck you mine (at least as far as these three go), because your rate of earning will be more or less the same. Since you can spend a lot of time hunting around for little lumps of Omber and shifting can positions, it seems sensible to me to stick with the more abundant ores, and let the others stampede off to the latest Omber spawn.
Whether you agree with the figures above or not in your own experience, it's plain that there is a lot more to profitable mining than just which ore costs the most. I haven't tried this analysis with Veldspar yet, but I will. Fluctuations can make one ore the better choice over another, but Omber is not the clear-cut winner for newbie mining.

Remember :D
After refining the ore, dont just sell it over "quick sell". Activate the "advanced market info" and take a look where to sell the minerals at the highest bid (under "demand", sort "price" with highest value at the top)
Since you've got a fast ship, you could fly there and THEN quicksell (making sure thats the right sellvalue) and get more cash. :D
Hope that was helpful

Edited by: Fjellu on 26/03/2004 21:37:43 Where can you get a Miner 2 ??
Which skills and what level should you have before beginning to refine your ores ? I've seen some different hints about this.

You need mining 4 to use a miner2, and you can get them in Pator, Yulai, Luminaire and New Caldari that I know of for sure (because my corp is selling them there).
Good prices--plenty of competition.
Gradient is hiring. Read our Code of Conduct before applying.
