So I finally trained Targetting V and Multitasking. Shame that locking more than 7 targets doesn't really fit in the UI very well
Horizontally aligned targets. Vertically aligned targets.
Horisontally or vertically it's impossible to avoid overlapping other UI elements, at least at 1280x1024 resolution.
Dear CCP, I know this gets requested every single week, but how about a complete UI overhaul/redesign? EVE is an awesome game that now has a lovely, shiny new graphics engine but which is still crippled by an outdated, clunky, badly designed and frankly embarrassing UI. This problem is just one of hundreds.
I've seen and posted in multiple "UI redesign" ideas threads over the years but they consistently get ignored. Yes, the drone UI changes are good. Yes, it's good that we can finally move a few UI elements (although that's very bugged - rearranging chat & overview windows every time you log on 4tehlose) but it's only scratching the surface of the problems.
Hire an Interface Design specialist, I beg of you! ________________________________________________________________

I would have to agree, on some points. The neocom and layout of the chat channels is generally fine, but everything else needs a "slight" redesign.
Just one word: Compact. Make the ui compact. Remove graphics where they are not needed ("frilly" edges), put elements closer together (why is there a gap of 15,000 miles between each target icon?), and make certain things smaller (the ship ui for instance, way too large).
There is no argument against it, since you can simply include the option to keep the current ui.

Completely signed. Furthermore, logistics greatly complicates this. Would be nice if friendly targets were on one thin and sleek column, and enemy targets on another. Better yet, why not have one sleek bar indicating targets, and tabs that you could assign targets to. That way it takes up the same amount of space and yet would provide more information in a much clearer manner as friends would literally be seperated from foes and would ease the frustrations with logistics.

Totally, and well put.
The chat channels thing, well, they're "ok" but they still take up far too much room. Especially given the way the local is also an intel tool (arguing about whether or not local SHOULD be an intel tool or not is a seperate discussion). Having local open and displaying all people in it takes up a huge amount of screen real estate once there's more than about 5 people in local.
Sigh, I don't know why I'm bothering tbh, I know CCP think the UI is fine. All I can think is that the lead UI designer is Hilmar Petursson's nephew and nobody dare tell him that he's useless ________________________________________________________________

Get a bigger screen :) But seriously, one of the best things i've ever bought was my 20.1" widescreen monitor @ 1680x1050, It makes EVE so much better than a standard 4:3 monitor in every aspects, and besides the LCD's are quite cheap nowadays.

While I agree with you that larger screens make Eve so much nicer, that isn't really a solution to the problem, the UI is a bit dated, and could do with an update.
I would be happy (for starters) if the targets were condensed in the same way that the drone window was.

Not gonna type out the entire position again, so TLDR version:
UI = garbage. Either hire a ten-man team to do nothing but UI tweaks, or open source it enough that the community can fix it for you.

I agree, with opening it up so we can fix it ourselves.

Sorry, but that's not a feasible solution to poor UI design!
And anyway, say I solved CCPs problem for them by spending ú100's on a new monitor I'd then be stuck with the problem that the font is too small to comfortably read at higher resolutions! ________________________________________________________________

ya rly, a new monitor is one of my top things to buy.
CCP buy one copy of guildwars, or hell I am willing to send you my account. seriously just open up the interface controls. I remember everything being scalable and movable.
you guys did great letting us move a few things, but there is much more to be moved and made smaller and on/off-able.

During my time in Eve (almost 2.5 years), I have gone from a 17 crt->22" lcd -> to now a 24" Lcd. Each time, I got more real estate. With a 24" I finally have enough space to do exploration and not feel 'cramped'. Yes, in 2008, while using a 24" monitor running in 1920x1200, I am no longer running out of room.
Contrast that with other MMOs I played in the past with my 17" crt... it was a bit tight there, but not bad really. So, their games were quite usuable on a 17" running in 1024x768... 3 years ago. Whereas Eve just got a customizable UI with Trinity... one month ago
Eve's UI is simply poor. I can't defend it, tbh; though the changes they've made via Trinity are certainly welcomed, Eve is simply 3+ years behind its industry's competitors. Sad really since interfaces are the most primitive yet essential part of any game.

EVE really doesnt have set goals, its a freeform sandbox - yes a sandbox with kids that occasionally take a dump in it, but a sandbox never the less.

How do you make targets stack vertically?

If by "customizable", you mean "now we can move + resize ALL the windows!".

You can drag the small crosshair on the top right of them anywhere on your screen but theyre still very large even on 1280*1024 and will clutter op very strangely.

I had a feeling this problem would arise with the new movable target array, but I only have five targets so I couldn't check.
Until CCP come up with a better UI, they can alleviate the problem somewhat by letting us set an option to force the target array to start a new row after a certain amount of targets (i.e. x targets per row).
The interface does need a reworking. We need to be able to scale our target array interface and our ship controls. It would also be most awesome if we could move the location of our ship on the screen, so we could have it somewhere in the top half and move our target array down, closer to the ship ui to reduce mouse cursor screen traversal. At the moment the reason we can't do that is because everything starts to get in the way of the actual view.

Right-click the target origin crosshair (the near-invisible one just above your overview when you have a target locked) and select "Arrange vertically" or something. ________________________________________________________________

Id love some way to bring up settings to make the target icons small, medium, large or small, normal, large :)
and same for ship ui at bottom.
