In many sci-fi novels, movies or whatnot there are inspiring names, in some yet horrid and then there are the ones that grow on you, especially easy since it's left mysterious and unmolested by the Lucas script in this case.
I'd nominate jedi master Sifo-Dyas for best name.
To support immersion through inspiring names check out this thread and voice that support.

I'd say Suzumiya Haruhi...just because the character is awesome and so that DS doesn't have to. ---

Come on, its not that awesome a name, nor creative. Haruhi's a (decently) common Japanese first name.
On the topic of Haruhi, however, "That Sneering Bastard" is clearly the best name in the novel.

Best Scif-Fi name is John Smith. I know who the original was and they used it in Haruhi as a tribute.

Oh, no wonder. It all makes sense now!
Speaking of which, Doctor Who is one of the best Sci-fi names ever.

Names that standout for me are
George Orr - from Lathe of Heaven by Ursula Le Guin, I'd guess its a deeper more adult variant on the Haruhi character, and I presume predates it by quite a long way (Lathe was published in 1971
Severian - Journeyman torturer and executioner and leading character of Gene Wolf's Book of the New Sun. Actually every name in this book has many and deep meanings, including places and items, Severian's sword for example is Terminus Est (approximate translations are The Line of Division or The End). Frankly if you can read you need to read this book. It's utter genius.
Ship names in the culture - I generally dislike culture names as they are a bit too intentionally complicated and literary, however I make an exception for his ships which I think are witty and funny, I particulalry like names like "I Blame Your Mother" and the class names for warships (Murder, Genocide, Slaughter) as they tell you exactly what the ship is for.

Edited by: Nuala Reece on 28/01/2008 19:58:24 From the classics: Valentine Michael Smith and Jubal Harshaw, from Heinlein's 'Stranger in a Strange Land' and Horselover Fat from Philip K. ****'s 'V.A.L.I.S.'
Derivative, but better: Jubal Early - the bounty hunter in the tv series Firefly
Personal favourite: Hiro Protagonist from Neil Stephenson's 'Snow Crash'
Spectacularly silly but successful, from Dr. Who: The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe (otherwise known as Max)
Simple but effective: Glyph, from the brilliant Ballad of Halo Jones story 'I'll Never Forget Whatsizname'
