I thought of lots of reasons.........
probably the worst thing you people did was make somebody pay out $800 of real money just so you could pad out your wallets with a bit more 'pretend' money
admittedly one or two of you said you were 'uncomfortable' about it
but NOT ONE OF YOU STOOD UP AND SAID IT'S NOT RIGHT
NOT ONE OF YOU SAID DON'T SPEND REAL MONEY ON MY ACCOUNT
you people disgust me
this is my last ever post in this place

I have no clue what you're talking about, but if it makes you feel any better, we don't like you, either.

No idea what you're talking about. Quotes and/or links might do the trick. Try that next time.
I suppose you might be talking about some deal going "south" and somebody ending up in the "IPO negatives" for a rough sum approximating 800$ of real-life money at some more or less random exchange rate (could be anywhere from 10 bil ISK to 16 bil ISK, I'd say). IF that is the case, ever heard of "scamming" ? Since nobody's holding a gun to your head in real-life, a 10-16 bil ISK loss left uncovered is the same as a 10-16 bil ISK scam in the eyes of the "investors". The ONLY person who MIGHT feel any RL obligations whatsoever is that specific character who is "in debt" for this large sum of "pretend money" and values his in-game reputation HIGHER as his real-life money.
I fail to see what your problem with it is. That is, if that is indeed your problem, and I am unaware of such happening.
So, OP, start making some sense or get out while you still can.

He's talking about the IPO where the guy was flying around with a bunch of freighter BPO's in his shuttle and got blown up. He used RL money to buy GTC's to make up the loss.
Ricdic had offered to buy back shares from people for 80% before this was announced because Ricdic was confident things would work out.
Apparantly this makes Mtber very very angry.

He's talking about the guy who bought and sold GTCs to make up for a loss that he incured for... well, whatever the reason was. Don't remember the name of it now, though. Don't remember if it ever actually came to any resolution or now.

I think it has something to do with a slightly anachronistic idea of integrity about the game.
However, when anyone and everyone had the same tools at their disposal, it is simply foolish not to use any tool you might need if you have the means.
It also might be jealousy.

Ah, yes, yes, I found the locked thread (I generally avoid reading locked threads). It was more or less EXACTLY what I suspected. Somebody values his in-game reputation/credibility higher as his real-life money.
If this guy was somebody who just bought a rare MTG card, or some vintage baseball card, you would have absolutely ZERO problems with him valuing his hobby higher as his money. But since this is a GAME, and nothing in here is TANGIBLE to you, it automatically means it's worthless, so everybody pouring any money into it is stupid and/or opressed and/or whatever else negative you can think of, and moreso for the rest who DON'T see this as a problem ?
Seriously, what's the problem with any of this ?

Edited by: Daeva Vios on 28/01/2008 00:39:24 Nobody asked him to. Several people were stunned that he decided to, and a few throwbacks were even offended. And, to be entirely honest, it was a financially sound decision when viewed as a move to maintain reputation and keep the same level of isk.
Bakimi would have had to work for several months, if he was lucky, to get that amount of isk himself. However long he had to work IRL to get the money to buy GTCs, it was nowhere near as long.
Bakimi would have had to work even harder, for significantly longer, to salvage his reputation. By replacing the loss out of his own pocket, he was able to salvage his reputation with a minor smudge.
From a financial point of view, it was an extremely sound move. Anything else has no value in the Market Discussions forum.

I forget exactly what I said but I know I said "I wouldn't do it but each man gets to fall upon the sword of his own choosing." What part of respecting someone else's decisions don't you get? Or are you one of those that feel you know better than he what to do with his life? Originally by: Mtber this is my last ever post in this place
Somehow I doubt this. |

I'd label it as a defitite "meh" on the MD relevance scale.
On one hand, the move that brought the IPO into its current state shows poor risk management (I mean, seriously, the fact that suicide gankers scan for and suicide on just about anything that moves through their scope that's worth risking a shot at is almost "public knowledge", so, no, security through obscurity has a high risk of NOT working, and even less so when you put all your eggs in one basket). The "proper" way to do this would have been to do it one unit at a time (not all together), using manual pilot for all jumps, in the fastest aligning ship possible. As such, one could wonder about future decisions regarding the IPO, if any would exist that would involve any risks at all (I'm speaking purely hypothetical here, not about the actual situation). If somebody can just use "real life funds" to get a "clean reputation" slate in the forums, what's the point of reputation to begin with then ?
On the other hand, he promised something, and that was the only way to deliver. So, he had the choice between cash or game reputation, and he chose the latter. How much of a reputation, well, in some people's eyes, a lot more, in other people's eyes, a lot less. Personally, I'm kind of neutral over here, to be honest. I would personally never have done this, but then again I would have never put myself into such a position to begin with either, so, as I was saying... a definite "meh".
