Hi CCP -
In real life, I'm a miner. I am a geologist by trade, with more than a passing interest in astronomy and exo-planetary geology. Needless to say, mining in Eve is interesting to me, yet nothing like the real thing. I know Eve isn't the real world, but I'm qualified to be passionate.
Mining, is a very dynamic, ever-changing, highly variable and risky activity. The emphasis should be firmly on exploration.
Modern day mining methods employ many mining techniques, purpose-designed equipment and especially skilled personnel to reduce risk and increase productivity.
I don't see this changing. Ever.
Mining conditions change, even within the same mine site, from day to day and operation to operation. To mine effectively, you must think on your feet and adapt to situations as they appear.
I'm all for making Eve's mining more dynamic and variable - as others have said here more change in content is an improvement.
Mining is by definition , even in an operating mine site.
Ideas in this and other threads I like: - Changing mining locations - exploration is a must. - Difficult or dangerous minerals - radioactives, toxic ores are classic examples. - Adverse environments (I'm familiar with these, even if it is only flies and 50 degree heat!) - Specialised mining equipment for different ores. - Mining licences (this is how we all do it in the real world). This could be set by empire, or by sovereignty in low sec areas. Enforcement is another matter, just as it is in the real world. Hence NPC rats, local player 'security' fending off unauthorised miners or just plain ore thieves.
My addition: Make the mineral names real! It grounds the game in solid theory and lends it more credibility with us nerds. A personal beef of mine is the 'slight change from real mineral names aspect' :P It should be 'Pyrite', 'Feldspar' etc. Where's Carbon, Silicon and titanium with no 'R'?
Make asteroid belts feel more realistic. Waste 'roids, debri and more variable appearance that is tied to the material being mined, quatity etc. Get rid of wierd crescent-shaped 'belts'.
If you need an interested geologist's advice, free of charge, let me know.
Looking forward to training my mining lasers on something a bit more substantial...
