If your skills are better in missiles, then the Hawk is alot better especially for low level mission running, level 2 for example. But in all honesty the Assault Frigates are seen as a stepping stone to HACs, so you might want to save up for a Cerberus.

What is the purpose of this ship?
For the majority of situations you'd be better off in a Caracal vs a Hawk.
It is fun though, and you'll learn a lot of pvp tactics with it(its a small ship so its harder to hit, but its heavy so its very slow, which isn't a good thing for a small ship). __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Truth be told, the Hawk is quite horrible except for low-level complexes or something. Sig removed, inappropriate link. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

PvP HArpy all the way.
PvE Hawk all the way. least in my opinion i fly both, the Hawks great at mission running and plex's ;)
i actaully enjoy blasting through lvel3;s in it (least till they turn it in to something that sux less in pvp).

Despite its slow speed, the Hawk or Harpy can prove very useful as a tough tackler against larger ships in PvP. In my Harpy I've lasted 6min solo against a web-equipped Mega and have forced a Myrm pilot boasting T2 drones to abandon his hopes of killing me and run away with serious structure damage (would have killed him if I'd had a warp scrambler).
The Hawk can pull off the same feat with even greater efficacy due to its significant shield boost bonus.
Team up with some long-range, sensor-dampening Caracal/Rokh/Stealth Bomber pilots and run a gatecamp in lowsec or 0.0. They can sit off 60km away, perfectly safe thanks to the fact that the poor soul's targeting range is reduced to less than 20km while you tank the ineffective damage dealt by your soon-to-be-dead BS or BC target. You'd be amazed at how well the Caldari AFs can evade and recover enemy damage with a T2 or faction shield booster.

AF's in general are weak. Harpy is decent for long range sniping or a close range blaster set up.
The Hawk in particular is terrible. It is outdamaged by the Kestrel, and outperformed in almost every aspect by a t1 caracal.

The Hawk is superior to the kestrel - longer range and better tank. For the same task you'd use a kestrel the hawk would be better. Is it a good ship - NO, but the Kestrel comparison is a bit silly.
You're right about the Caracal though - better tank, and better damage output, just a slower lock speed. __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

No, the comparison is completely apt. The Hawk may be superior to the kestrel in other ways, but in terms of DPS, which was all I compared, the hawk does *less* damage than a t1 kestrel. There are many instances where all I'm concerned about is making my frigate do more damage - more, I would say, than I am concerned about making my frigate do more tank.
Still, doing less damage than a T1 frigate, while laughably sad, does not immediately relegate the hawk to the scrapheap of obsolescence. As you point out, it *does* do other things better than the Kestrel.
It's the way it loses out to the caracal in virtually every aspect that moves the hawk from the category of 'weak, but may be worth flying for very specific purposes' to 'lol leave in hangar'

I'd perosnally rather have a Kestrel than a Hawk for pvp. (Yes, since I can buy, fit and insure a Kestrel for the cost of the uninsurable Hawk...) For pve I'd rather have a Caracal.
Although <3 Blarpy.
