Hi everyone,
I'm not exactly new to eve but have only been playing with Battleships for a short time (5million skill points).
I'm looking to purchase my third BS and wanted some advice really.
I have a armageddon which I use for mining (my first BS), and a Scorpion as I love the look of it.
What I'm after is a "agro" ship, a ship I can fly when I know there is going to be trouble brewing. For instance NPC hunting or I'm flying through a known PVP Pirate operated area. So the ship needs to be fairly versatile/quick.
I love the look of the Raven, but seeings as CCP doesn't want anyone to be Caldari anymore I'm not sure its right for me. Its too easily locked down and too damn slow.
Any ideas? I would prefer a tier 2 ship to be honest.

Had a feeling it might be a tempest.
Only got minnie skills to frigate 4, and no projectile skills. best get my training hat on :)

If you need a ship that can combine a travelling setup with a good PvP setup go Megathron with blasters.
Against NPC's the Mega can compare to Tempest too, using rails, blasters and drones.
Anyway, either of them will do, and i must say the Minmatar have the better LvL 1 BS.

Being once a proud owner of all lvl 1 BS ( cept a scorpion which i just never bothered to build cause of the Caldari situation back then ) I can say Typhoon isn't the best lvl 1 BS overall. Its the best damage dealer if you have high skills and also the fastest. However its low armor dmg resistance and terrible targeting range don't do its bonus's justice. Having to fight with 1400mm at 55km to get decent damage just plain sux. I would go with 4 800mm and 4 Siege launchers and a belly full of drones. However; Dominix with blasters and a good smart bomb setup can easily rival that ship so its all about your personal comfort level. Having had the ability to fly every BS in the game on my last account... ill probably stick to cruisers this time cause they are just more fun. Tempest btw I would reccomend... or even a well thought out scorpion.

On the Typhoon, you don't need to do 55km to get decent damage for the 1400s. Using EMP L, you can get optimal ranges at 25 to 35K depending on skill, and with phase plasma, longer than that. However range bonus isn't its main bonus attraction---its the ROF bonus. Just remember that this ship is optimized for projectiles which can dish out damage without using cap.
In general all around balance, I pick the Typhoon for best level 1 BS. It has the combination of having a good CPU matched with a large number of low slots. It's power grid is the main weakness but on that, it's only equal to two other tier 1 BS.
It has the best speed and locking time of any BS, almost cruiser like in that ability. It has fairly good agility too. It may have a shorter targeting range, but it has more than enough low slots to put a tracking enhancer.

I¦m at the same point. I have an apoc and a scorp. Had an arma as 1st BS. I thought of going for a Raven next but every1 says that tempest is the best atm. Whats so bad at a raven?

From what I can work out, the Raven is like this
Pros:
Awesome damage if the opponent is not warping away
Cons:
Slow
Very Unagile
Easy to Lock
Terrible Lock Times
max of 4 turrets
This is fine if you want a huge kestrel that costs 100million isk.
I'm in two minds as I love the look of them, and I like to fly my races ships. But its a slow missile boat thats easily countered.
This is my opinion that I have drawn up from what I have read and heard, so it may all be total tosh!

I d like to know what you mean by "easily countered"
because ,Imo ,the raven is the one that can counter the others..specially when its comes to ew.
One thing for sure,the raven is not a versatile ship,but a damn good fighting machine if you got the skills to go along with it.

Some good timed Smart-Bombs (medium 3x)can kill of all the missiles/torps a raven spits out!
or
Defender-Missiles can be used to neutralize a raven
or
Speed to run from the cruise/torp
