Team,
I have been told that the Mac client runs about 85% of the PC client, due to the Cider hardware translation. I assume that BootCamp runs at 100%. However, has anyone tried to run Eve on the Parallels VM? It would obviously be more stable, as it IS the windows version, however, I am curious if it any faster than the current Mac client.
I can live with the current level of instability and performance degradation for the thrill and novelty of playing Eve on the Mac (way to go!), but I am looking for any way to improve both before the next patch/release.
Also, I have been told that the next Mac release will be late Q1 2008, and it will include the latest Trinity graphics improvements. Has anyone heard anything else new?

PS. I just joined the OSX chat on Eve. I recommend everyone do the same. Mini corporation/Alliance in the works!

You will definitely get a performance hit by running this in a VM if it even works, most of the time 3D adapters are not in VM so I doupt that it will even work. If it works you will be running very slowly since it will probably be the 3d software rendering.
So performance will be terrible.

I have VMware Fusion with Vista installed on it so I can't try this but to quote from the Fusion page: VMware Fusion offers experimental support for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in Windows XP virtual machines, making it possible to run DirectX 9.0 applications and play select 3D games on your Mac.

i tried running in a Fusion VM. while it basically works it has quite some "trippy" graphics glitches. performance was about the same as the cidered mac client (just tried for a few minutes).
so that's not really a solution.

I have tried running thru a Parallels VM, it is kinda slow, no premium graphics, and there is one pretty huge issue...
You can't see the mouse cursor in the eve window... at all. You can see when it rolls over something and highlights, but you have no way of knowing where the cursor is, making the game completely unplayable.
I have found forum posts from people who had similar issues with Eve dating back to summer of last year, so who knows when or if it will be fixed.

Anyways the mac client is a joke, very bad performance, only useful to change skill.

I've been using it for months, and while not 100% it is good enough for use.

On my white 17" iMac Core 2 Duo, EVE runs well enough for multiplayer missions. I have problems with my ISP at the moment, so I have lots of latency and loading lag - if there are several ships present it will take the game a few seconds to load the details. I'll finish my warp in empty space, then suddenly all the near space objects start loading up.

Premium graphics for the Mac are coming soonÖ (first Q '08) I just hope it will be playable then. I get around 15-50 FPS on a 2.66 MacPro. I just prey CCP can keep those rates up.

It's nice to be able to see Eve-Online running on Mac OSX but there is definitely a performance hit.
I've tried the game on my two partitions:
(Mac OS X 10.4.11 & Windows Vista) iMac 2.0ghz cpu, ati x1600, 2 gigs RAM
I find that the Mac client(non-premium graphics)lags significantly more than the windows client(premium graphics enabled), with most settings low of course(on both operating systems).

I don't have too much of an issue and I play for several hours at a time. There are issues, but none that effect my gameplay to point where I...well...can't play. Moots |
