Its called ninja mining, and it aint difficult, you simply have to use a cruiser when mining on your own, npc bs spawns are deadly. So Say I. Einheriar Ulrich of the Bloodline of Einheriar.

I did, my corpmates have too. We've earned hundreds of millions mining alone with no escort.
Simple: find hidden belts. The rats come a few times (you warp away of course), but then after a while they stop coming and you can mine freely forever.

How would you go about finding these 'hidden belts?'

You don't do it. Sitck to scord since there is a pyrite shortage and I don't want to pay 4.20 for pyrite. Even though that is a cool number.

ok before and after patch ninja mining.
Before
Go to 0.0 asteroid belt and find nice roids. jump in at a safe bookmark to see where pirates are. warp to roid furthest from them, mine a full hold then warp to safe space to drop off ore.
repeat.
if you are targetted warp to safe spot and repeat.
You could also mine hidden belts with no risk as pirates wouldt come- a good reward for finding the belt in the first place.
After
warp into belt at safe spot. warp to furthest roid from pirates. 10 seconds after you start to mine they warp across to you. warp to other rocks. mine. 10 seconds they warp to you. etc etc
You now Cannot mine when pirates are in the belt- they trail after you.
Hidden belts, at least these are safe, so i thought. started mining here , went afk, come back to half destroyed ship, manage to warp away. again they follow you.
before / after
personally (obviously) i prefer it pre patch because it was viable. it is now much mich harder, to ninja mine.

It was, yes. But hidden belts are NOT exploits, nor are they gridbelts.
And its the only safe way to mine. Yes, NPCs come every few hours, so you CANNOT GO AFK. I repeat, you cannot go AFK .
Hidden belts are belts that are on a seperate grid from the original belt--to find them, you must use the directional scanner to find what direction they are in, and use an MWD to travel about 500km till you get in the new grid. This isn't gridbelting... as the roids are STILL in a grid, just not the one that the rest of the belt is on. 0.0 systems are covered with these hidden belts.
We did this *AFTER* the hidden belt problem was fixed, not before. It is still possible to mine without NPCs--you just have to be actually at the computer in case a few come to bother you for a few minutes. And most NPCs in 0.0 are not battleships--even my indy can take nearly a minute of fire from the 85k groups.

Hidden belt mining is not somthing that is realy worth doing unless you intend to stay there for a looong time as it will take quite a while to find a belt.
Ninjamining is the way to go for casual miners in alliance space.
Best done in a cruiser due to its relative large cargospace and many turret hardpoints but is actually safer with a frigg but you will have to stay there for a longer duration.
Step 1: Set up a cargo dump point, this can be at a moon or a planet but its far better to place it at a safespot. The number of containers needed is enough to fill your transportation industrial.
Step 2: Bring your mining ship to the system, I would sugest you set up a second log off safespot that cant be found as there is nothing there to see as long as you are logged off.
Step 3: Cruise the astroid belts till you find a belt that is free of NPC, start mining the roid of your choise and align your ship against your escape warp point, for example a nerby moon. You allign by flying so your ship is pointing in its direction, this will cut down on the warp away time as all you really have to do is reach warp velocity.
Step 4: If NPC "warp" into the field, warp away, you should easily be able to escape if you are on your toes and spot the NPC on the scanner, this escape works equally well if PC arrive but them you should know are about by watching local.
Step 5: When your cargo is full of ore you go to the cargodump and unload it.
Step 6: When the cargodump is full you get your indy and haul it in.
Advanced: If you have found a particularly good spot you can bookmark it so that you will come out of warp within mining range of the roid and still have just as good chance to warp away if there are NPC in the field.
Also you can leave an industrial in space at your cargo dump so that you dont have to go get it every time you have filled the cargocontainers. A fair word of warning about this version however is that ships have been known to wander off if left unatended in deep space, its rare but it happens, also other player can and will try to track your ship down and steal it.
The other safer version is to train your alt to drive industrial and log him off out there but this is generally considered bad sport.

Cruiser + MWD = hidden belt found in 10 minutes easily, with about 2 billion in minerals for the taking.
