K, I`ve been trying this game now and like it very much. Now when I made my character I went a little quick about it. I choose ammar as race and then I chose fighter as a pre-configuration option. Now as I`ve mostly gotten my mining skills in order I just realised that almost all weapons and ship skills has perception as its main attribute. So now I wonder what the reason is the the pre-configuration: fighter has very high willpower and low perception. As willpower is the second attribute for the gunning and ship skills I`ve seen and perception is the main attribute, how come its not the other way around? Basicly I`m wondering why a fighter should have higher willpower instead of perception as thats the way the points were spent choosing the pre-conf.

I don't understand attributes at all. Been searching two hours now for an explanation of how to distribute attribute points at character creation and I have found nothing. I've never played an MMORPG that had to little info available about it.

Edited by: Losna on 26/03/2004 22:08:47 Bah. Ok let me put it differently. If you where to make a fighter character, how would you spend your points? In my excample I have Willpower/perception/intelligence and memory in that order with highest attribute mentioned first.
Does attributes only effect time spent learning a new skill or also how much effect you get out of your learned skill? Does having a high primary and low secondary give you any better bonus in performance than low primary and high secondary?
Edit: The "Bah" wasnt for you m8. I hadnt gotten any answers when I wrote it so that was why.

As far as I understand (I may be wrong, please don't hurt me then ) attributes work as follows:
- attributes influence skill learning speed, and nothing else - primary and secondary attribute for a skill have equal influence - the influence of both attributes together is linear - twice the value in both attributes means twice the learning speed
And my personal suggestion for any newbie is to keep the attributes as balanced as possible, with a slight emphasis on perception/willpower (spaceshop command/fighting) or intelligence/memory (science/industry).
Later in the game you can use implants and certain skills to raise the attributes you need most.
For detailed questions about skills and implants, please check theskills forum, especially this thread.

Yes, attributes only affect skill learning time. Primary and Secondary attributes do affect skill learning differently with Primary having more weight. I do not have the formula but with a little searching, you can find it.
Willpower may seem a little useless now, I think only Leadership skills use it as a Primary attribute, but keep in mind that new skills will be added in the future. You may find a high willpower attribute to be a plus then.
Also, keep in mind that that gunnery skills aren't the only ones that are important for a fighter. Having good Engineering and Electronics skills are a must as well. These two categories use Intelligence and Memory attributes to determine training time. I agree that a well balanced character is probably the best way to go in Eve.

Ok, Heres my take on attributes and skills.
I was lucky and most of my attributes are well balanced, except for charisma so thats no biggy. All around 9 or 10 not sure of the exact figures. Perception and will power are slightly lower than INT and MEM.
All of the Learning skills are based on INT and MEM. Check it out on the market.
So WhatI am doing is First training up Analytical Mind and Instant Recall and Learning up to at least level 4. Then I am going to train up Perception and Willpower to at least level 4.
By my rough estimate this will take me about 2 weeks. but in the long run, it will save me months in training time.
I just checked for me to go to level 4 to level 5 in instant Recall would take 8d 11h. so level 5 would add two more months if I trained them all up to level 5.
So my two choices for distrobution of attributes would either be Hihg MEM + INT or Balanced across the board (minus Charisma).
