hi all i'm hoping to get my parents to change my ISP, we're with the dreaded tiscali, they get hooked on things that look flash like ooh tiscali broadband up to 8,bs for only 14.99 a month or whatever. they think it's amazing but for me its been horrible all the way, what are some good ISP's that people use that dont throttle the bandwidth and treat gamers as 2nd or 3rd rate? also anyone got any good things to convince extremely ignorant and cheapskated...people to change ISP's? thnx MM --------------signature------------------------ Those who show profit will pull through in the end. Would help if you told people roughly where you lived as that defines your options.

Zen Internet has one of the best reputations of the UK ISP market, but aren't the cheapest. I mean they're not particularly expensive or anything, but don't expect bargain-bin prices.
But then, you get what you pay for. If you go bargain-bin again, you'll end up with exactly the same problems Tiscali is giving you... ------

Waitrose gets extremely good reviews, especially for support, but they only offer a 5GB/month up to 8Mb/s service. Be value (ú13.99/month, up to 8Mb/s, no caps) provides a much more stable and reliable connection than Tiscali in my experience. A few caveats, though:
1. If you don't use the wireless router they send you, you don't qualify for their tech support.
2. They send you the router by default unless you actually phone them after applying to switch.
3. If you accept the router, they expect you to return it if you switch ISP unless you pay them ú100 for it.
4. The FUP operates in a very abrupt and direct manner: if you're deemed to be downloading 'too much', they can cut you off almost immediately unless you co-operate.
A few differences between Be and Tiscali:
1. No traffic shaping/throttling (at least that I've noticed). 2. More reliable connection speed - the Tiscali connection would waver from 1.8Mb/s up to 5.5Mb/s, but Be seems to give us a steady 3.5Mb/s. My research services Spreadsheets: Top speed calculation - Halo Implant stats |

I've always heard good things about Zen and since my internet connection is getting progressively worse with time (I'm with Pipex, who Tiscali bought out a while ago... why am I not surprised that the service is going downhill), I'm planning on making the switch.

Pipex are bastards. I ordered a MAC from them last week presuming that my account would be cancelled WHEN I used the code, not when I ORDERED the code. I only found this out yesterday when I got an e-mail saying my bill hadn't been paid yet. I checked my credit card statement online and it had been paid; but when I went to check my Pipex account details I found out they were trying to charge me for breaking my contract (a whopping ú150). I didn't want to switch ISP until next week when I had the money available.
I remember when I switched from AOL to Pipex several years ago. My account with AOL was cancelled (and my final charge paid for) when I actually used the MAC code (actually it was a few days later when the switch to Pipex was completed). But it seems that Pipex can't wait to get rid of me.
So be warned if you're leaving Pipex; they'll cancel your account at the time you request a MAC code. I'm still online at home for now, but I've only got 5 days left. I was pretty much forced to choose a new ISP (I went with IDNet) yesterday after realising all this.
Pipex where somewhat alright (if you discount the torrent port blocking) up until Tiscali took over. Since then they've gone downhill really. Their website services rarely work and their staff are dumb (Tiscali sacked most of the veteran Pipex customer support staff).

I'm currently with Zen.
Very reliable.
