ok, other than the usual methods for gankage fun, i want to try my hand at scanning down misson runners with a cov ops frig and relieving them of their shiny faction mods.
i understand deadspace misisons are harder to scan down than a safespot using regular probes and having looked at various hints and tips which have suggested using exploration probes and a scan probe launcher, though it seems to me the downside to to this is shorter range on the probes and loads longer on the scan results. Does anybody have any useful info or links to a guide for nailing mission runners? thanx JM

You use exploration probes when you are within 4au of them and you know they are behind an acceleration gate. For everything else you use normal probes that have a very low chance to catch them behind a acc gate, but if it's a mission like "the blockade" then it's got a good chance, or if they hang too much on the first acceleration gate, as they are not within deadspace yet. Go to Motsu/Dodixie/Aunia and practice in a t1 frig.

I wrote something in another probing thread not long ago, cba to find it atm.
But probing a lot will give you BMs enough to be able to use exploration probes anytime in a well probed system.
Do missions in the area to access parts of the solarsystem otherwise unreachable.
And use recon probes only if you must.

i use snoops almost exclusively, and with my skills i have a 40 second scan time which means 5 scans per probe. About 1 hit every probe. -------------

My alt got a 21.8 sec scan time and a virtue set plus prospector plugged in. He always has lots of probe time left after he finds the evil mission runner.
My thought is: shouldn't there be some kind of rebate for probe time unused?
:p
Edit: in answer to your question, a prober is only as good as the amount of bookmarks and how much he/she has the system covered with them.

Level 5 mission runners are quite easily probed out from my experience so far. Multiple Ships, multiple hits, and 99% they are using drones which just makes it easier.
Usually takes me about 1-3 probes to nab a level 5 mission in a system I've never been in (roughly about 5 minutes-8 minutes).

Also you have to use recons generally if you can't run missions in the region (or like me, could never be bothered to get into them properly )
It's a chore to begin with, and you miss lots of targets, but you eventually build up the safespots which let you start getting within 4au.
Also, draining your cap to warp between spots can help get a more accurate distance than trying to bookmark mid-warp.
Also..

Not quite. You always use exploration (Quest) probes when within 4au, choosing the correct type for the race of the ship you are probing, and this is whichever mission they are in. Also, the immediate area before you jump through the first accelleration IS deadspace..or at least it has been on all the mission runner's I've grabbed...

Quest probes are considerably more reliable and faster than recon probes, while they do have 5 times the scan time, they have over 12 times the strength, so in terms of result per scan, racials are MUCH faster. A well-skilled covops pilot with all the goodies can cycle a scan probe in 82 seconds, paired with an effective bookmark grid in your target system, there is no deadspace you do not own.
