Dark shikari. after replying to this thread. -------------
lets see him NOT reply to this to save his life.
he got me hooked on death note a few days ago in the thread with the guy that asked what would happen if all the pilots in a plane died.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 30/01/2008 18:47:52 Death Note is unique in that it started with one of the most brilliant concepts in history, had an amazing idea of what to do with it, with an incredible plot--and after about the first half dozen episodes got progressively worse with every single one. In particular, after the Yotsuba arc, it really hit the pits. I absolutely hated Near.
The best episode is the one with the 12 CIA agents, by far.
I'd say its definitely one of my top 10, but not top 3.

very good anime upto episode 26 or so imo. After that it's pretty meh, barring the final episode. Not without it's flaws however.

I've only read the manga, haven't come around to watch the anime yet. Does it differ much / at all from the comic book? From the comments on this thread I gather that essentially they are pretty similar: starts out very strongly (the first few volumes had me absolutely hooked - and indeed, the way he manages to cleanly dispose of the 12 FBI agents is brilliant, that was a memorable episode), but afterwards it somewhat loses the plot.
I don't have much of a problem with N (aside from the fact he's just a rehashed photocopy of L, down to the autistic personality quirks), but the story later becomes more of a generic thriller instead of the clever mind-f*ck games from the earlier volumes.
I seem to recall that the story was originally intended to end around the time L dies, but that given the series' enormous popularity the authors were pressured into continuing it further - and I think this shows.

Same for the anime.

In the anime he's a bit less of an L rehash... and well... I just hated the character. I was really really hoping we'd get a Hamlet-style "everyone dies" ending, so I could watch Near die too.

Yup.

I thought the same really. Near is like a copy of L but without the part where he's likeable. L was great because he had weakness - he was funny, compassionate (to an extent) and at times you could even relate to him. N on the other hand just seems like a robot. Effective, but lifeless and boring.

The anime society at uni is voting this week to either continue Death Note beyond episode 26, or move on to another series instead. Chances are, Death Note will probably get voted out. Wonderful concept though.
And to placate DS here; We've already finished watching Haruhi. --------------------

Clearly this means you have to do a public reading of all 9 Haruhi novels!

The Death Note anime bored me to tears, it was all done so cheesily and the character designs annoyed me a bit...I liked the manga quite a lot but sometimes the plot holes got to me (i'd be happy to name a few but I don't want to spoil for others) but overall it was a good series.
On the Black Lagoon note, that series is awesome, any series, that has pirates, corrupted businessmen, a torpedo boat, mercenaries AND and attack helicopter, all in the first episode, combined with a good script and cool characters is win in my book. ---
