Edited by: Roxanna Kell on 30/01/2008 22:37:07 Due to fall off with virging BB, they are genuine B******s now, I decided to go with BT. not sure why, knowing that they are jsut as bad, i didn't want to give my money to virging anymore, Richard is far too rich. Anyhow, here is the question after that useless rant.
Can i still have BT broadband if i stop the BT phone line? Will it still work as long as it is connected to the BT socket?
its 11 pounds cheaper if i no longer use their phoneline.

Fair enough. I'm using BT broadband myself, and we had to get the line reactivated and pay line rental before we could get the broadband installed. The line was already physically installed so at least we didn't have to pay the line installation cost. --------------------------------------------------------------------

The enginner that terminated your line did it the lazy way! - They should cease the line in software first then PHYSICALLY unpatch your wire pairs on the frame in the exchange.
A lot of the time the engineers just software cease the line, and don't remove the wires from the frame and if they are jumpered onto the BB multiplexers the BB signal is still present on the wires all the way to the customer premises!

You'd need a BT line to have BT Broadband. Personally, I don't know why people switch phone lines. They still have to pay BT for the line rental (BT own all the lines in the UK or so I've heard). All of these other phone services might offer you cheaper calls, but you still have to pay the BT line rental with most of these services. I know this because my mum practically spends every waking moment on the phone chatting to family members. My parents switched phone providers several times over the years but came to the conclusion that BT was still the best deal.
As for Broadband, I'd strongly consider one of the better brands out there such as IDnet, Zen, or Nildram rather than BT. Avoid Pipex/Tiscali like you would avoid a rancid drug addled prostitute (unless that's your thing of course). Generally, the ISP's offering the cheapest deals that you see on TV are the worst. They block ports, have dodgy service at peak times and their customer service is worse that the aforementioned drug addled prostitute.

O2 are now offering broadband at reasonable prices, i've done some research and a lot of people have left good feedback. It's even cheaper if your on one of their paymonthly contracts for your mobile service, it's even cheaper! --------------------------------

Sounds like Carphone Warehouse. Their service started off well but then went rapidly downhill as too many people saw the cheap offers. Seriously, if you rent cheap broadband you get a cheap service.
EDIT: My grammar is really bad today. It's like I've gone down 30 IQ points during my sleep.

Yup. I'm using TalkTalk currently (who I believe are owned by Carphone Warehouse who I believe are owned by AOL) and although their service is cheap and they do offer me a nice download limit (40GB), I can't exactly say their service is reliable.
Speed-wise I don't really have a problem since I can't get faster than 2MB in my area anyway and they offer an 8MB service. It's extremely rare for me -not- to get my 2MB at least.

2 megs are about average for the UK at peak times if you are subscribed to an 8 meg service. Seriously, I don't know why they advertise for 8 meg services anymore because I've never reached 8 megs yet and I've been through 2 ISPs and in a few days will be on my 3rd.
My speeds with AOL though were actually faster than Pipex (who I'm leaving for IDnet). If AOL's software wasn't such a virus I would probably still be with them. No limits, no port blocking and the customer service was much better than Pipex's village idiots. Using Pipex during peak time is a *****, but after midnight they start freeing up more phatpipeage.

Well you know, got to take everything with a pinch of salt. o2 currently own BE broadband, but have now started the ADSL service.
Another option you might want to consider is Plusnet. --------------------------------

Tbh, BT is the best broadband you will get for that kind of money. It's not ideal, and the customer service is a bit ****, but it works.
You get what you pay for, ey (I'm on BT 8mb connection (512 up / 7.5 down) and I actually get 2 maximum dl, 30kb upload. The thing is, if I went to the 2mb package, all I'd get is 512. I don't even live that far from the central hub. It's obviously capped.
Lamecakes. Owell, it's cheap as frack and I get good pings. 族---族

I remember being with BT at one stage, i was 16KM's away from the exchange and i got a speed of only 512kbps. :( but when ntl was around we had the cable service in our area. i would never change from a cable service to a ADSL service.. ever.. although i did have really good pings with ADSL but cable is consistant and doesnt really affect any of my gaming. but i guess it depends. if i lived closer to the exchange i would have probably stayed. ---------

I'm only 3km from the exchange and 3 years ago I couldn't even get broadband in my area and when I did get it - It was only 512K
I've had 2MB for a while now, but haven't actually been able to get more than 512K since a month ago since the router BT gave me (Voyager 205) dosen't support ADSL2 so can't obtain anything higher than 712k
