I've loved and played this game since it came out. I recently switched over my ISP replaced my modem with a router and reformatted my computer, ever since doing this even though i have installed BF and the latest patch (1.40) i cannot actually see any servers when i try to play online.
I have absolutely no idea what the problem is, the filters are set as normal, and i cant find any answers on google. Anyone got any ideas?
P.S. im asking here because generally eve people are knowledgeable.

I've had similar problems in the past so I tried just reinstalling and that seemed to fix it. Sometimes after you've reinstalled the game gives you a warning about playing on ranked servers with a modified version of the game. Despite the fact that you had just reinstalled it and the patch (and nothing else).

I have resintalled it twice, the first time i installed an old patch then the new 1.4 someone suggested that may be the problem. So i then reinstalled it again and just this time installed the 1.4 patch. Exaclty the same problem, are the patches incremental? ie. do i have to install each patch from first to last?
Thanks

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 01/02/2008 16:02:56 im shooting completely in the blue here, i have NO idea if it will help, but it takes only a short amount of time, and it cannot hurt.
afaik older versions of BF2 (which is the same engine as BF2142 afaik) had some problems with different caches. nobody knew why. so clearing those caches (hey, sound familiar?) sometimes helped.
google CCleaner and use it, then reboot. its a very convenient little tool imho.
but i have another idea, and thats A LOT more likely: you said you switched to a router, which prolly acts as a hardware firewall. maybe you have to enable port forwarding or something. im not really familiar with routers.
but id have a look there, bet thats where the answer is!
edit: about the patches: there are incremental patches, these should be installed in their order. those files have names you cant miss. something along the lines BFpatch1.0-1.2 which would mean, it brings version 1.0 to 1.2. those you need to install in the EXACT order thats listed. but normally patches are smart enough to know.(ie. the wrong one wont run and install over your current installation)
ANd then there are FULL patches. they just have a version number and tend to be biiiig. i always try to have the latest full patch of any game i regularily play. saves the hassle of keeping track of patches. and i rather have one file backed up than 3 to 5.

Thankyou, unfortunately i am also clueless about routers, anyone able to help with that?
Thanks again

normally you start with giving model and version number. so people know WHAT router you have.

As for the incremental patches, I just checked on the downloader and only the 1.4 patch is available, which I assume to mean that you only need the latest. May be worth a try though. - Sig follows:

Edited by: Tal Nok on 01/02/2008 16:58:58 To test this theory with the router being whats screwing (which I highly doubt as most store purchased routers don't have routing tables blocking specific ip's):
EDIT: I can't read apparently. I hope you have your old network setup? Plug that back in place (looks like your using DSL from the actual equipment so you shouldn't need to report your MAC to your ISP) and see if you can connect afterwards.
If (which I highly doubt) If you connect, get a new router.
I had an the same issue with BF2 when it came out, one of the patches screwed my system in which every game I joined I could play for roughly 2 minutes before "loosing server connection".
Uninstalling, reinstalling worked but not after removing the BF2 registry.
1.4 did include a few extra server search filters, but I highly doubt this is the issue as you say....eve people are knowledgeable.
I'd suggest another uninstall, with a look into the registry to see what is leftover from bf2142. Once installed, I would also download a new version of the patch (incase thats borked too) and run the new patch.
If it still doesn't work, I'd send EA a mail.

Easily found...
How is port Forwarding configured?
Instructions for DG834, DG834G, DG824M, FR114W, FM114P, FR114P, FR328S, FVL328, FVS328, FVS338, FVX538, FWAG114, FWG114P, or FVS318v3
These routers do port forwarding by assigning port numbers to a "service" associated with the application you want to run. "Rules" are set for particular services. Rules block or allow access, based on various conditions such as the time of day and the name of the service.
To Create a New Inbound or Outbound Rule
1. Submit the router's address in an Internet browser. (The default is 192.168.0.1). 2. Enter the router's username and password. 3. From the main menu, click Security > Rules. 4. Click Add for inbound or outbound traffic, as appropriate to the application you are planning to run. 5. Select the Service. The services the router knows about are listed in the drop down. If the service you want is not listed, add it as described in the next section. 6. Select the Action, for example ALLOW always. 7. For Send to LAN Server, enter the IP address of the local server. Note that this is also the IP address the computers on your LAN will access. 8. For WAN User choose Any, or limit access to particular IP addresses. 9. For Log selection it is reasonable to turn logs on, especially at the beginning when you are unsure of the result of the changes you are making. Later, you may want to set logs to "Never" for performance reasons. 10. Click Apply.
As noted in user manual for some models:
* Consider using the Dynamic DNS feature on the Advanced menu, so that external users can find your network when the DHCP lease is renewed by your ISP. * If your own LAN server uses DHCP, and your IPs change on rebooting, consider using the Reserved IP Address feature in the LAN IP menu.
To Add a Service for These Routers
1. Click Security > Services > Add Custom Service. 2. Enter any name you choose for the service. 3. Select whether the service is to use TCP or UDP. If you are unsure, select both. 4. Enter the lowest port number used by the service. 5. Enter the highest port number used. If the service uses only one port number, enter the same number. 6. Click Apply.

I really think EA actually made the game worse with patches after its released the game. Don't blame me, blame the main I'm supporting. |

If port forwarding was an issue, he wouldn't be able to logon and verify the account username/password as it's all running on the same port, another reason why I don't think it's the router causing this issue. Otherwise, he would be bombing out when it asks for account verification giving some lovely EA error such as "the master server could not be connected".

i dunno, im have no clue about networks...
but when i used sygate fw and set BF2 to only act as client and deny serverrights (i dont even know what this means EXACTLY) i could log in with my account and password (ie connect to the master server) but not browse any games...
dunno if that means anything in this matter but my computer vodoo tells me, yes it does.

Weve tried the port forwarding etc, a friend has walked me through every router problem he thinks it could be and how to fix it and none of it has worked.
It doesnt look like its the router, i really appreciate the help if anyone else has suggestions, i'd love to hear em.

Edited by: Kin''Tarr on 01/02/2008 23:02:16 Do you have Northern Strike booster pack? BF has a mucky installation order when using booster pack, and i know that it will have adverse affects when trying to play....
iirc : BF 2142 > (might be v1.25 then v1.40) v1.40 > NS > v1.40
Not sure if it may be connected to your problem though :(

ya ive got northern strike, though the first time this happened it wasnt installed, then i reinstalled it, tried it, still didnt work then installed northern strike on top of it, but ofc made no difference. Now someone else in my corp has tried installing the 1.40 patch and has got exactly the same problem.
EA suck.

This.
I gave up playing BF2142 when I couldn't log in to the game for about a week or so ('first' login worked, 'second' didn't), I just gave up trying in the end. Shame, cos I really liked that game, nearly had all the unlocks too. All they had to do was make it so people can play the damn game... - Sig follows:
