Check to make sure that the client is not blocked by a firewall.

There's another thread about this and it is a known issue in the 'Known Issues' forum. Basically, if your ISP is Tiscali or a subsidiary, you are stuffed. They block the port that EvE uses during peak traffic flow times. Tiscali appear not to be doing anything about it and continue to block the port at will. Some nights there will be no problem, but at other times you can be merrily going about your business and the game crashes back to the character log in screen and the Status Unknown message appears. It could be like that for hours before they open the port again.
Best advice is to tell Tiscali where to stick it and give your money to a decent ISP instead. If they try to tell you that you are tied into a Contract, explain that they are not providing the unlimited access that they advertised and that they are in breach of contract. Threaten them with legal action instead.

/agreed tiscali are a sorry excuse for an ISP.
If they advertise "unlimited access", ask them why you can't access EVE. NO doubt they'll say something like "we have to limit heavy P2P applications at peak times" and then say to them "So your limiting my unlimited acces?". They do have a "get out" clause for that question burrowed into one of their policies I noticed while scanning through it basically saying that unlimited broadbands can still be limited, although they don't put it like that, they try hiding it behind fancy words.
My ISP, BTYahoo! also have this, and a fair usage policy, however theres only been about 4 days since about 2005 that I haven't been able to connect, and that was for about half an hour a day, during the course of a week or so.
