AS say a main telephony tool? Whats your experiences with it, or do know an app that is better?

Its a very good app, you can even get skype mobile phones in some countries now which let you call other skype users for free anywhere. I havnt used it to call landlines but gor PC to PC calls its pretty decent sound quality, way better than vent or TS (although you are limited to about 4 people per call).

Remember to make sure that Skype DOESNT turn on when your pc starts. I haveny heard anything good tbh, but maybe others will tell you different.

Unlike TS, you can ring people on their pc, wish makes the whole difference. Msn does it similar but slagishly. Video quality, and the fulls creen feature on skype is better than msn. Not to mention the very well additional games with skype 3.0. So i recomand it, its a good programme for what it does.

Why I have skype start on startup, which is also scripted to speak to its base station that connects to my house phone. I have no issues at all with it. btw with how it works if skype rings it rings on my landline phone, and tells me on the screen of the phone that its a skype call and what contact, while if its a landline call it just says landline..
Skype is an awesome program i am unsure of anything other than comp to comp but i know my other half just bought a skype mobile phone and when we chat over that it sounds ok....

another great part is something like 1 cent a minuate calles to actully phones anywhere through the internet.
I call my friend in engliand sometimes just to say hi :)
but mostly it's badass because it works between mac and windows.
meaning me and my girlfriend stephanie can still talk to each other :)
and it's free.
video is nice.

Pros: Really good sound quality Good video quality Free connection to other Skype users Chat tool tells you if your message went or not
Cons: The telephone bit isn't the cheapest (it's not expensive either, but you can get cheaper) It uses PCs running it to relay data sometimes, kind of like a Bit Torrent client (I consider this no big thing since the service is free but some people object) I sometimes find it a bit hit and miss at sending / receiving chat messages to my more distant friends. I've had this with MSN and ICQ too though, so :/ EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I used Skype once with some PlanetSide mates after game. After a while they asked "Dude, why are you breathing so heavy? And you light your lighter a lot. Are you smoking something?"
Then I realized Skype wasn't PTT.
I never played PlanetSide again. ----- TANSTAAFL

Considering skype originated in my little country, I'd like to say a word or two ;)
First of all, It is rather popular. I'll describe some of the most popular free, and paid services.
Free: * Calling, good quality. If it is not able to estabilish a direct connection, it routes it through a relay (P2P network.) * Video - again, very nice quality compared to most other stuff out there. If you have a HD capable video camera, a fast enough CPU and 384 kbit/s+ real upstream, you can actually send HD video, looks very very nice. (HD Video is only on windows though). * Messaging, games, filetransfer.
Paid: * SkypeOut - Call any phone in the world at local rates. Has saved me tonnes and tonnes of money. * SkypeIn - Allows you to get a local number (albeit in select countries), so that people can actually call you from a real phone - at local rates, it's just like they would be calling a normal phone. It's quite affordable too at around 50 eur/year (iirc). * SMS - Prices for sending SMS messages in europe are pure rape. Skype offers 2-3x lower rates than most European providers.
Some interesting things about Skype: * Very user friendly (read: your grandmother can operate it). Which is the strongest point. * Quite advanced NAT traversal techniques. Uses at least bidirectional holepunching, if unsuccessful, relays data. * P2P network protocol is derived from the original FastTrack Kazaa protocol. Reason being, that the same Estonian people who made the original KaZaa, also made Skype ;) * Due to it's P2P nature, if you are on a fast connection with open ports, it might use a small amount of your bandwidth to route other calls. It won't hog your bandwidth though - a tradeoff for it being free.
Now perhaps the most compelling reason to use Skype is it's availability. * Skype native client is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Windows Mobile. * Available for Symbian based smartphones via fring. * Dedicated hardware solutions, which do not need a PC to place calls are also becoming widespread - there are WiFi / Cordless Skype Phones. I have personally used the SPH200D from Netgear, and it met all my expectations :)
Either way, Skype with a Skype WiFi/Cordless phone used together with SkypeIn and SkypeOut is a complete, and cheaper replacement for your landline phone. Only thing to consider is, you'll need your mobile, in case you have to make an emergency call.
Hope that helps.
P.S. No, I don't work for Skype ;)
