also, how can i know what to predict from the missions? as i said, 99% of the missions the agent gave me were too easy and a waste of my time, then he gives me a mission that you all are saying is a suicide mission?
is there some mission difficulty setting i can change that im not aware of?
another option to keep in mind is using long range weapons. you can replace the autocannon with artillery, then don't use the orbit command. fly just close enough to the nearest guy (optimal + 2x falloff) to shoot him once, then align for warp (by double-clicking next to whatever object you plan to warp to), and fire away when he gets within better range (optimal + 1x falloff). activate your afterburner and click on the speed bar to regulate distance.
the simplest way to be able to predict what you will be facing in a mission is to look at what the rewards are. higher isk and LP reward missions are going to be more difficult than the lower isk and LP reward missions. there is also a igb compatable website that I don't have handy that provides a walkthrough of all combat missions
edit: @ guy who laughed he was still in a rifter - I primarily fly a rifter (or its AF variants) probably 75% of my time in game after over a year. it takes fewer skills to fly frigates, and for a newb who is trying to get into the game, that's not something to be laughed at, as staying in the rifter allows them to get all the support skills built up before flying the bigger ships they can't afford to lose, so they will be less likely to lose them.
