Hi all, Just thought I'd ask around the forums if anyone else had done a really dramatic change in career at anytime in their lives? Did it turn out for the best? Was it the Worst move you made?
I myself have just begun the transition from IT to Commercial Diving. To say it's a rather different change it's also fun and exciting for me right now. So has anyone done something similar?? ------------- Criags Dive Blog - Career Change EVE-Ink Tattoo Project |

Yes, around 12 years ago I did a dramatic career change, it worked out great and I feel very happy about my decision.
I won't go into details though, as that would require making public things that I'd rather keep private, but I will say go with it if it feels right and you've got a reasonable plan. Few things can make you unhappier than being stuck in the wrong career path.
Good luck!

I'm moving from dental technology into writing full time. I fully expect to be homeless and starve to death in a sewer somewhere as a result, but who knows, at least I'm following my dream. Maybe it'll pan out.

Kind of the feeling I got after four years in college. Becoming a software engineer was the natural choice for me before that, but I got more and more fed up with the tedious crap and the idea of becoming a full-time code monkey.
So I dropped out, moved home and started looking for work. Through a spot of unbelievable luck I got a job as a CNC operator (laser cutting, woot! Go Amarr!) at a local factory when one of their operators broke his wrist the day after I had applied for and been turned down from a job there.
Best. Job. Ever. (let's ignore the fact it's the only real job I've had). It's nothing fancy, I just fire mah lazers and go home happy after a night's honest work. I still love everything related to computers and do a bit of programming etc - I just don't want to waste and potentially ruin my passions on work, because that would mean having to find new hobbies. I still get to apply some of my geek skills at work (and I'm the best (which doesn't say all that much tbpfh)) when something breaks down, but I'm not expected to and thus it becomes a fun challenge instead of a task that must be done.
This might sound odd but I'll probably never work with anything that relies on any of my skills/interests.

Ive been a commercial truck driver ever since i got out of the Army in 1992, so let me tell you from 16 years of experience ! IT WILL NEVER SUCK AS MUCH AS DRIVING!
whats fun and exciting at first is the thought of traveling, and not being stuck behind a desk. no way i could type all the **** they put on you at first. hopefully your not fully opposed to being Union as its about the only way in america you can get a decent life outside of trucking and still be driving a truck.
not sure what you what part you want to get into, but one that is profitable is the expeditor's( small cargo trucks that move small expensive freight) please o god put what type your thinking of getting into.
Its not a bad life. but otr trucking is way different that what any lying sack of **** recruiter will admit

about a year ago i was laid off like 10 days b4 xmas
i have been in school for IT , i like it it's decent but the part time job front is crap here and with 42 days til i graduate i do fins myself running low on energy and enthus. but whenever i get down i just think of my last job and my last boss and say F%%% them . keeps me going .
how will it all turn out ? hopefully for the best
but i figure when i start doing interviews im gonna hop the desk grab their stapler and say " hire me or im gonna staple your hand to your f%$#*&^ head " . it's really all about people skills and positive thinking .

I can relate to this somewhat. I do like doing some technical things every now and then (level design, modding) but I find myself getting VERY bored of it after a while. Though I may have quite a bit of skill at it I would absolutely hate to HAVE to do it as a job.
My job atm requires me to be physically active (not majorly or really strong, just moving about constantly) so I'm pretty tired when I get back home, which is perfect for doing comp-related things. I just can't imagine how I'd cope with sitting at a computer for 8 hours only to come home and do more of it. I would probably die of lethargy.
I'm sure I read something somewhere that Computers (particually computer programming) are supposed to be the most soul-sucking activites you can do?

Try welding tbh. Sticking your head in a bucket for 12 hours a day 7 days a week isnt the most brilliant of activities.

No thanks, the only welding I do is when my car needs a bit of love (body/exhaust). I don't envy the poor bastard at work who spends his entire day with the welder and angle grinder...

I left retail. It was great for a month and a half I looked for jobs and drank all day. Then I got a shoe in position with a local IT provider. So far I don't have to deal with customers and I get all the coffee and candy I can stand, or sit. The only downside is my cube, its in the middle of a high traffic area. So far I am loving my carrier change m-f Friday ftw.
