Ok what would skills would I need for my alt for shield tanking all day in .5 sec mining???

To mine in .5 with a hulk, you should just be able to run a small shield booster and fit rat specific hardners, or maybe invul fields... cap, grid and cpu skills to support those (should know what I'm on about if you're about to get in a hulk).

Run a set of 5 light scout drones. With that as your protection, you could run even a Civilian Shield booster and tank most everything you'll encounter. With a standard Small Shield booster, you'll tank it all, even the rare Faction spawn.

in 0.5 and above a hulk can tank most rats with no tank except may be a hardner or 2

Back on topic, run 5 Hobgoblin IIs (with drone interfacing, combat drone operation and drone nav all to III say) and the rats will barely get within shooting distance before being blown to bits.

if your in your ship there no need to tank all day rat can be overcome fast in .5 with either drone or a small shield or even only drone, if your at work while your character mining then you may need a tank

If you mine in higsec a shield booster is fine the setup below can tank virtulaly any RAT in low sec including battleship spawns.
Lows 2 x True Sansha Power Diagnostic
Mids 1 X Dread Invulnerability Field, 1 X Dread Ballistic Deflection, Gistii A-small Shield Booster, Gistii Shield Boost Amplifier (or similar modules)
It is always good to have as high as possible cap as strip miners eat cap- cap needs to be 700+ for 3 strip miners.
Expensive yes - stay alive absolutely- but no good for a PVP attack in low sec oh the fun of 0.0! when you get feed up of tanking everthing just kill the RATS with Drones

an invuln and resistance amp should tank .5 rats passively.
dont think i have seen my shields go blow 90%
and i usually dont have drones out until rats spawn.
haven't mined in a while now, why mine when you can run lv4s

This is needed. Can also withstand the usual goon suicide gank squad as they won't expect you to have a good tank. This way you can scoop up the loot of 4-5 caracals when they stop by...

i lol'd irl, face it if someone wants to gank you while your in your hulk..... there is no tank that can save you, unless the character ganking you is 2 days old.
