I am confused on Aggression flagging.
I was in an asteriod belt in 0.8 space.\
I saw a Red marked Serptine Spy ( I think that was its name. ) An NPC pilot.
It had a bounty of 6,000 on it.
So I attacke and blew it up and was flagged for 15 mins for aggression.
I don't understand. I thought attacking NPC pirates was alright, isn' it?
And does this now drop my Status?

ah there are different types of aggressions this one is okay to have it will just stop your ship from disappearing if you log out for 15 minutes because you engaged in combat.

Thank you. Does it also effect the nearby Gates?
Do I have to sit in the Asteriod Belt until this wears off or can I return to a station or us a Jump Gate?

Edited by: Gartel Reiman on 05/02/2008 23:55:58 A general rule of thumb is that if the countdown timer is yellow, you are OK. If it is red then you are classed as a global criminal so gate guns (and CONCORD in high-sec) will shoot at you.
Yellow timers generally mean that you've "flagged yourself" to some player/corporation, so that they can open fire on you anywhere without penalty (while the timer lasts). It's a bit misleading as to why you get this on pirates... since they will open fire on you anyway.
So the short answer is - if the aggression countdown in question is for a pirate corp (you can tell by hovering over it), then just ignore it.

Can I shoot someone who targets me? I think is what is happening when the list of nearby objects starts flashing yellow?
Or do I have to wait until they shoot at me before i can fire back?

The overview is capable of distinctly marking "hostile" players. This is all players that you, either due to agression flags, personal security rating or corp wars, can attack without CONCORD enforced repercussions (concordokken or global aggression depending on high or low sec) taking place. By default the overview marks such players with a flashing red background.
Which has led to the following rule of thumb (assuming you didn't modify your overview display too much): You can ONLY attack enemies without CONCORD intervention when they are flashy red.

You are right that if their icon gets a flashing yellow broken square around it, it means they have a target lock on you. However, this in itself is not an aggressive act (and neither is activating certain modules such as ship/cargo scanners, or remote repair modules). As a result you will not have the authority to fire on them at will for this.

Yes.
As Shanur says, the best rule of thumb is that you can attack targets whose entire row in the overview is flashing red. If you think you may have changed your settings or are experiencing an overview bug, and you have not disabled the 'Proceed With This Dangerous Act?' warning, then you can just try to fire at them. If you have the right to engage them, you will do so as normal. If you don't, then you will get the pop-up warning box, from which you can cancel the action. (It was scary the first few times I trusted my ship to the warning popping up, but after that I got used to it and now I'll happily "activate" my guns on something I think might be a valid target.)

If what you're fighting is a + (cross), that is an NPC, and as long as it's red, you can shoot scramble do whatever you want whenever you want. + white NPCs are usually police or navy, shooting them will get you killed fast.
If what you're fighting is a [] that is a player ship. That's where you have to be careful; if they shoot you Concord should come to your rescue, unless they tricked you with a can flip etc.
