Ok I upgraded my distro last night to Fedora 8, which uses the new PulseAudio server for its sound management, ASLA is configured to run through it. All my other aps work fine but for some reason eve kills my systems sound if I have another program open that is playing sounds (eg listening to an .ogg file in the background) Eve will crash on start up. If I kill the media player eve plays fine but upon alt tabbing and reloading the player Eve will instantly crash upon the play button being clicked.
I rectified this by changing 'HW' to 'default' under the ASLA section of the audio tab of the Cedega config tool, now when I start up Eve it kills the sound eg no sounds in Eve and no sound from the media player or any other apps on my system. This is quite a pain, I can live with disabling sound in Eve but I'm sure other people may get bitten by this bug. Switching to OSS is not a solution as it just results in extremely high pitched static being emitted from the speakers.

I am suspecting that PulseAudio is the reason why I can no longer start the Cedega client with out splash and crash, although changing to "Default" in ALSA settings made no difference and even stopping the PulseAudio daemon failed to allow me to start the cedega client.

Thought I'd bump this to make sure CCP / transgaming are aware of the issue, I've been following the Fedora-dev list disscussions on Pulseaudio (https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2008-February/msg01054.html), apparently theres a problem with apps changing sessions eg switching to a new virtual tty.
I not sure whether this is related to EVE (as I think eve doesn't run in it's own session) but the symptoms I get are almost exactly as described, eg I'm playing music in Rythmbox fire up Eve and the sound stops playing. As soon as I quit eve sound resumes.
I will investigate this further when I get more time. If other people are using pulseaudio can they let me know their experiences?

try turning audio off through the eve settings utility, if the game starts normally that way it might defenately be related to the pulse audio server.

The game starts normally, it just kills sound in any external apps such as rhythmbox, VLC and teamspeak.

Is this related to the official client using OSS?

As Hardy is still in alpha state, things will change and if history of Ubuntu's rollouts are an indicator, things will improve before its released in April. That said, pulse audio is KNOWN to have some issues as a prior poster indicated.
For TS, try installing the aoss utility, as teamspeak in its current form REQUIRES OSS to work. run TS from command line or launcher with the following: "aoss teamspeak"
Also, if you can, report these bugs to Ubuntu via its bug reporting tools so that the developer teams can be made aware of the issues.
LIKE HERE, posting problems in the forums will ONLY give you feedback from other users (in general). Bug reporting is the ONY SUREFIRE WAY to alert the folks who actually work on the code.
