I'm playing with official client in my AMD X2 5600, GeForce 8600GT, Ubuntu 7.10 and I get 40 fps avg. Will the windows client (classic) under Wine do any better?
If so, is there a Howto somewhere on everything needed to get Eve running under Wine?

Assuming you have 3D graphics already enabled since you are running the Official Client, the following command line will set up wine for you. Just copy-paste the whole block into the terminal (CTRL-SHIFT-V will paste into the terminal).
wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - \ && sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list \ && sudo apt-get update \ && sudo apt-get install wine msttcorefonts \ && wineprefixcreate \ && cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/* ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/ Now all you have to do is download the EVE Premium installer for Windows and run it (double clicking should work). Wine will automatically create the Linux launchers on the desktop and in the Applications Menu, complete with icons.
You may want to change the resolution settings (ie to run in windowed mode) but this can be tricky as EVE can't ask Linux for the right available resolutions properly. An easy way around this is to run EVE with the following command, change the resolution settings there, and afterwards you can start EVE with the launchers.
wine explorer /desktop=,1024x768 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" /safemode

I got myself to do this yesterday and I can confirm this works and now I get at lest 20% more FPS compared to cedega's client. Just a couple of notes:
- You must download the PREMIUM client, you wont go pass the login screen with the classic client and the fix is to apply the premium upgrade patch. If your computer can't handle premium content just disable it in config screen.
- Add /end /LUA:OFF at the end of the command if using multiple clients with different resolutions or it will be a mess (I have two monitors with different resolutions)
I love it, I can finally copy and paste from/to the client to other windows... and premium graphics rock

Wine>Cedega.
Cedega should really get their patching going. Wine has better fps, is more stable, has support for letters like sS÷ and has a cut and paste ability that works outside the client.

sorry to say it, but - considering wine/windows installer option - official cedega version is crap. don't get me wrong, i was using it for almost two months and i am always very happy when someone bothers to make linux version of their products. easy Ubuntu installer was extra bonus. and then, yesterday, inspired by this thread i've try to install EVE from windows installer via WINE. it was like loosing chains or something. EVE now is MUCH faster and have less graphics issues. basicaly, i've found none.

I can quote and 100% confirm what Cez said.
With a lowly AMD XP2500 (single core) and GF6600GT (still AGP, mind you!), using WINE + premium graphic client with premium content disabled was an amazing breath of fresh air for my Eve gaming experience.
Especially the GUI: it's radically more responsive now.
And, as I'm using gentoo, I also gained a little bit of speed (detractors would say <2%, but everything helps 8) ) by recompiling WINE 0.9.56 and tuning it for my setup. -- Kate |

it seems that my joy was to early, after latest patch i've experienced serious fps drop. for now it happens only in space (on stations, and overall performance is flawless), and is more noticable in some systems than in others (in Villore f.e.). have no idea what could be the cause of this situation. has anyone experienced something similiar? graphical settings have nothing to do with it, i've checked this out.

I hate to disagree with the "glory of wine" posts, but I'm running both and testing with both, AND, fps is variable. In some places, I'm seeing BETTER fps with cedega. In others I'm seeing better with wine.
I'm also seeing some odd gfx glitching occasionally with wine from time to time, as well as some serious overhead in the "memory" department compared to the cedega client. (wine .9.57 seems to use memory way more heavily than the CCP client.)
I knock neither one, but at this point, when I'm in serious fleet or combat operations, I will NOT use wine as it has flamed out (read: locked up or crashed) at very bad times while I'm not seeing ctd's or lockups with the cedega client.

Not a flame, I'm just responding to the OP.

update: situation, i've described in my last post was something new, and appeared directly after 1.1 patch. i don't think that it was fault of Wine at all. i had good FPS in my home system, and after patching there was serious FPS drop (in space). but... this problem has been solved in the latest 1.2 patch!!! i have good quality animations back right now - in space and on station as well :D and still prefer Wine/Windows client crossover than official Cedega based.
so... ship systems AOK, fly safe and have a nice day!!! |

After reading this thread yesterday, I installed the Windows premium client on Wine as per instructions at top of thread. The effect was dramatic - smoother play AND better graphics on this system (dual 2.6Ghz CPUs, FX5200 AGP Nvidia graphics card, 1 GB RAM, Ubuntu 8.04 (upgraded from 7.10). Specifically - all ship and item icons are displayed correctly when in-station (no more white exclamation marks on a black background) - mining beams are now visible - almost no visual stutter at all when warping - graphics generally slightly improved and lighter
I have also been experiencing some graphical anomalies with the station interiors recently, but as I've only tried EVE on Wine for about half an hour, it's too soon to tell if those are gone. I also can't comment on frame rate, as I don't know a way to measure them without having the Cedega FPS indicator to hand (if anyone cn tell me how to get an FPS indicator up whilst playing EVE via Wine, 'twould be much appreciated).
This is much more like my initial, favourable pre-Trinity experience on Cedega than the so-called 'Linux client' is. Will edit this post once I've been in a few combats, etc.

CTRL+F Should work on all wine variants, recent wine versions, git, crossover and maybe even on cedega (though who cares about the latter).

Inspired by this thread I finally downloaded the Premium client for Windows, installed wine 0.9.60, installed the ms tt core fonts. The effect is really dramatic, EVE renders awesomely fast and basically everything runs much smoother. Even the lag in certain busy ice belts seems to be lower. And there was not a single graphics glitch so far.
I can fully recommend this solution, if you are still using the "official" Linux client, change NOW!

Edited by: Capt Slow on 04/05/2008 15:21:29 Still black screen :( Did exactly what Vaelo posted, got wine 0.9.61, copied fonts, installed premium client -> black screen. I tried to disable sound in winecfg and in eves pref.ini, tried safemode, two different ati driver versions (8.3 and 8.4), Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04, wine 9.59, 60 and 61 -> always black screen
I'm out of ideas - can anyone help?
I had problems with the official clients, so I tried wine but no luck so far :(
