*Freighters are in their own category and is simply out of reach for the average player. So the next best thing is to get the biggest industrial they can get their hands on.
Currently the Gallente Iteron series grabs a big chunk of this market. You just need to stick to the Gallente Industrial skill and you are all set. Eventually you get to fly the Iteron mk5. The Minmatar's Mammoth comes pretty close to matching the performance of the Iteron mk5.
Of course, nothing in the game really prevents the Caldari and Amarr from training to fly the Iterons and Mammoths. However it does seem a bit odd that only two races are given large industrial ships.
The Caldari makes a valiant effort in the Badger MkII, but is simply no match with the raw hauling capacity of the Iteron or Mammoth. The Amarr's Sigil and Bestower are pretty fast haulers but also fall short when it comes to its primary role: hauling.
Its not the end of the world if people have to train other race's spaceship command skills to fly the biggest haulers, but it would have been nice to be able to stay with one racial skill and still be able to haul equivalent amounts of cargo.
This chart also seems to imply that there should have been a Badger MkIII. Eve Ships The chart's scale appears to be off though.

Yea, with t2 fittings my badger only get's ~13k cargo space. Friend of mine took the time to train to level 5 and put cargo rigs in as well and he barely broke 20k. Somewhat annoying that with similar skills you only achieve just over half what an Itty can do, but them's the breaks I guess.

The chart's scale is fine - the Eiffel tower's in the bottom left hand corner as a comparison.
That 'Badger MkIII' is actually a Bustard, the Caldari T2 DST. As far as I know, it's unique for a T2 ship in that it's a different model, not just a new skin.

Edited by: Man''corr on 07/02/2008 00:21:11 Well Nothing can beat a T1 Itty MkV at hauling.
Not even T2 ships. T2 rigs make the difference even worse (since Itty gets an extra rig slots against them).
So T2 transports for just hauling barely manage to get even. But then you have a ship worth 55mio instead of less then a single one, OTOH transports have good resis.
Right now when it comes down to Mining op hauling in high sec; I know not eveyone does this, but it boils everything of these ships down to a single number Cargo capacity; its the Itty Mk5 for those civilian characters, but they are quite often in those hulks anyway, and you end up with the Mammoth, takes less than a week to fully train and gets you 17k with T2 cargo expanders. While actually giving you an extra High slot for tractors, salvagers for getting cans and clearing to belt of wrecks.
Yes it is nice to have a difference between races, but its sucks that its such a no brainer choice for T1 Indies.
EDIT: But what Id love is a in between type of ship form Indies to Freighters. It feels like going from cruisers to Dreadnoughts. Id like some battleship (comparison) type Hauler. Give it the same abilities of a freighter (also called disadvantages, no fittings blabla, no picking up cans) but only 100k cargohold and make it cheaper, maybe 100 Mio for T1. So you jump from 1mio expensive ships to 100 mio to nearly 1 bio. Would actually give us a nice ship to train for when not having the money that could easily buy a T2 Battleship :S. All of above post was formulated wth 100% honesty and 100% sarcasm. Now i only need to get drunk

Ok, okay guys. The impel fitted out with t2 expanders and t1 optimization rigs gets roughly 36.2k m3. The mark V fitted with t2 expanders and t1 optimization rigs gets roughly 38.4k m3.
Now if your doing a long haul and you fit GSC and fill them with items that makes the impel carry 47k and the mark V carries 49.9k.
Now seriously, the impel is a tone easier to fly. It's not a huge as the interon V and it doesn't get hung up on as many things.
Granted it takes twice the amount to align. I like the ship a whole lot better. I know cause I use it.

Why is a Freighter out of reach for the average player?
It takes very few skills to train into a freighter and they cost < 1bil isk to buy.
A dedicated miner/trader/industrial guy could probably do a BYOM deal and get one for very little liquid isk.
Its a good investment if you think you can make some money with it. . .. WELP! .. . |

On a side note, whats that ship above the Bestower? At first I thought it was an Abaddon but it cant be that big. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes, ty. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

I'm not a dedicated miner/trader/industrial guy. But the big hangup is that like all capital ships, the Freighter's require Capital Construction parts. Assuming a standard BYOM means get the BPO, well, not all the BPO's are seeded it seems (at least, I haven't seen any armor plate ones, though that might be an abnormality of Heimatar) and said BPO's cost around a bil, like the Freighter.
Going by way of researched BPC's, depending on price and quality, at best you're going to be spending around 330 mil just for the BPC's (Assuming 200mil Freighter and 5 mil apiece for the BPC's)
Err, at least that's what my calculations say for me getting my Fenrir. Nevermind that I haven't bought the Capital Construction skill (67 mil in schools) as well as Ad. Starship Command and (racial) Freighter (around 80 mil for both...)
So uh... Yeah. a Freighter is a BIIIIIIIIIG investment. Literally.
Also, is it just me, or in that Eve ships picture does the Caldari Titan look zomg pretty? Then again all the titans do...
Edit: Oh yeah, and top-tier haulers aren't cruiser sized. Mammoth's battleship sized and I bet the Itty V is too. Bestower and Badger Mk II are definetly underwhelmed though.
